I'm looking for info and/or references for veterinarians who debark dogs. Is anyone familiar with this procedure? I know some don't agree with it and view the idea as inhumane, but all our other attempts at controlling our dog's nuisance barking have failed miserably. It's either she stops barking so much, or we have to give her up. (And that's not a pleasant option... honestly, who would want a four year old nuisance barking dog anyway...We probably couldn't PAY someone to take her!) So if anyone has any info to share and vet references that are reasonably priced (I've had quotes for over $!000 for the procedure - yikes! - and also seen references for a few hundred dollars...), I would appreciate it tremendously!

It is my opinion that debarking dogs is inhumane; however, you should check out this link to information on the American Humane Association (AHA) page that states that while the AHA does not have a policy regarding debarking dogs, debarking will not result in a silent dog, which would seemingly defeat your purpose in having it debarked...

Is she an outdoor dog? If so, have you tried spraying her with the water hose everytime she barks? We had problems with a neighbor's dog who would come to our fence and bark at us. We began to consistently spray him with a water hose whenever he would do that. It was better than yelling or throwing something at him, LOL. Didn't take long for him to learn to not do it. Then his owners began to do it, too, when he was barking just to hear himself bark. Just a suggestion.

I don't think debarking is the answer. Besides being inhumane (think of it as if someone took out your voice box - yeah, all we hear is barking, but your dog is actually talking when he barks), trying to silence your dog could lead to great frustration on his part and lead to him becoming aggressive, which is way harder to deal with than barking.
I suggest you maybe find a good vet who treats dog behavior - try to get at the bottom of the reason for the excessive barking. Could be as simple as a deranged squirrel that keeps taunting him, or as complex as needing more attention. In any case, debarking isn't going to solve the problem, because the barking is a symptom of something else.
If you cannot come up with an alternative, I will take your dog. I will find him a good home.

I would not recommend this procedure, it is going to be expensive and not the best thing for the pet. Have you tried in home dog training? I am a veterinarian and their is a company called Bark Busters that I have had excellent experience with. They come to the house and work with your family and the pet. Their is usually a reason behind the barking and they have helped many dogs at my practice. Just a thought.

I just had to laugh when I read this -- because I SOOOO feel your frustration. I live in Keller in a subdivision directed by a HOA. I'm SO afraid someone's going to call the cops on me for my nuisance dog too. He's old, fat, snores and is DEAF! He goes outside and literally just stands at the back fence and barks! It's insane. The only thing he does hear is when I clap my hands "just so" so taht it's kind of high claps and that generally gets his attention and he comes running but you can literally talk to him right in front of his face and he has no idea you're talking to him -- just snores away.
I had a neighbor when I lived in Colorado that had to have that done to his dog as well .. it is a very weird sound afterwards... almost as if they have laryngitis... they still bark it's just a horse sound.
Our Rotweiller is the same way but a week of wearing a high tech bark collar nixed that... now when he even sees the bark collar come out he just looks at me like I hate you and won't even move. Poor dog! LOL...

Have you tried a bark collar?? We bought one at petsmart for around $75.00, we had neighbors that called the police on our barking dog twice. I love the collar, we have a begal and it has worked wonders!!!
