Also get checked for diabetes. Thats why I lost some of my hair. After taking medication and eating right it stopped.
I am 6 months post partum, breastfeeding and I am losing so much hair and it's getting scary. I am going to get my thyroid checked soon but I was just wondering if this has happened to anyone else.
I just noticed that I have small little hairs now covering the places where I had lost so much hair. I guess it's starting to grow back. What a hard thing to go through! Thanks for all your advice and wisdom!

Yes the same thing happened to me. It lasted for about a year postpartum. It was horrible if I went to the salon because the stylist would literally pull out handfuls of hair as she was cutting it.
They say it is because you don't lose your hair like you normally do while you are pregnant. Since you are taking vitamins and the hormones cause you to not shed your hair on a regular basis like usual hence the thicker hair during pregnancy. After the baby comes though it all comes out. Don't worry it won't be forever.
This is normal. When you are pregnant, you hang onto the hair that you would usually lose each day. Once you give birth, you start losing that exra hair. What seems like excessive hair loss is just your body normalizing after pregnancy. You can find out more in "What to Expect the First Year".
Take care,
Hi M.!!
It is not your thyroid, please it is your hormones!! I lost tons and tons of hair after having my son, it will grow back, but it is all hormonal changes that you have gone through.
Hang in there, it will all grow back.
I lost so much hair (thank God my hair is very thick)but I literally had patches of hair missing along my hair line.....awful...but it grew back...just another thing to go throught when having a baby....some people suffer through it and others don't. I had gorgeous hair while pregnant, but afterwards, it was a nightmare.
It started tapering off around 9 months to 1 year.
Good Luck!

6 months pp here too and I know exactly what you mean. I was convinced I was getting bald and it is indeed scary!!! I've been taking omega supplements but have no clue if its working - got this advice from the lady that does my hair. I am going nuts with this hair issue.
It's happened to me and every other nursing mom! Don't worry, it's totally normal! It does get better after a while! :)

Hi M.. Congrats on your new baby! And, Yes! This definitely happened to me too! I lost so much hair, but it started growing back slowly. I had these short, little, spiky hairs all over the place, but mainly in the front. It looked crazy for a while, but my son is 3 and it has totally all grown the same length now. :) But, I have found a product that works so well in helping mommies keep their hair and/or help it grow back quicker. It's Arbonne Intelligence Thermal Fusion Hair & Scalp Revitalizer. It's awesome, and it feels SO GOOD on your scalp! It smells good too, so I always feel like I'm pampering myself whenever I use is! :) Here's some info on it:

This happened to me and found that it was my thyroid. Go to the doctor to check your TSH levels.
My hair didn't fall out the second time around.
Good Luck!!!
I would imagine that the fact that your 2 kids are so close, you may have never lost the hair from your first pregnancy, so it may seem horrible. But, I can assure you that although hair loss is normal, it most certainly can be your thyroid! It took 6 months of pushing the dr to finally check mine, and sure enough I needed meds. My hair stop shedding within 2 weeks.
It is not always the problem, but post-pardom thyroiditis is a real problem that causes depression, tiredness, weight gain, and hair loss. So hopefully things are fine, but if not, be sure to take your medications if prescribed, and you should start to feel better soon. Good luck ~A.~
I am 4 months post partum and also breastfeeding...and I am having the same problems. My hair stylist has me on Nioxin products. But, I am told that the hair loss is normal. Just very frustrating, huh?
yes this happened to me after my second baby. my hair was falling out in handfulls!! i went through all the testing and it was nothing. the only thing that i could think of was that it was just hormones and nursing. i am now 2 months post partum with my third and as of yet i have not lost any hair. hope it gets better.

This happened to me too but I still think it is a good idea that you have your thyroid checked. It can't hurt to check. When I told me obgyn it was happening he ordered a full spectrum of blood work. Everything checked out fine but I appreciated that he had been so diligent. Good Luck
No need to worry. A hormone that your body produces during pregnancy keeps you from shedding your daily hairs for the entire 40 weeks. After you've delievered, anywhere from the first month to the 6 month, your body starts the shedding process. I know it can be scary, but believe it or not it's natural. You generally shed about 100 hairs a day. Didn't you notice that your hair was much fuller when you were pregnant?
I had the same problem. Try Nioxin shampo and conditioner. I got it at Ulta. It really works. It is specifically made for helping with hair loss. It will take a week or two to notice a difference. Also keep taking your prenatal vitamins.
My son will be 2 yrs next months and I still have globs of hair shedding and falling out especially right after I was it or brush my hair. My thick is normally Very thick and a lot and it's thinned out a lot. I normally shed but this has become excessive as well.
I have to sweep my bathroom floor 2-3 times a day at the very minimum.
Hope it will subside soon, I know exactly what you are going through. I do feel like it is hormonal but it could be added stress as well.
Good Luck

I had the same problem, but I started taking my Prenatal vitamins again and it really helped.
I had excessive hair loss until my daughter turned 7 months. I began to loss less after that. My stylist said it is normal. I thought I was going to be bald.
Completly normal because while you are pregnant your hormones cause your hair to stop falling out in its normal pattern and actually increases in its growth pattern, so by the time you give birth you have more hair than you normally do, hence pregnant women usually having beautiful hair. After you have the baby your hair then begins to fall out, but plays catch up for a while. Don't worry about it because it happened to me as well and it settle down after awhile, I remember it peaking when my baby was 6 months.
this is very normal. I shed a lot anyway, so when this stage finally hit me, I would have to brush my hair for 5-10 minutes just to slow down the shedding. I had handfulls of hair fall out every day. totally normal and part of the post-baby hormone cycle.
Hi M.,
YES! I had extreme hair loss after giving birth. My daughter is now 9 months and that has stopped. I think it tappered off around 6 or 7 months. I was pulling out handfuls at a time. It will stop soon! :)
I shedded for 2 months after haveing my daughter. I thought I was going to go bald. Now it is all beginning to grow back and I have little twigs of hair all over my head. It will eventually stop falling out. FOr now invested in a few brooms. I had to sweep everyday!
