I'm considering having endometrial ablation. My periods are very irreggular and I usually have periods 2 weeks per month. We've tried different birth control, ran all kinds of test, etc. We're definitely done have children (want to adopt a 3rd child later). I just wanted to hear from any women that have had it done.
Thanks,
C.

My sister just had her uterus removed back in Nov and she is doing great! She loves not having any more periods and since thats all she had removed, it didn't send her into menopause (a plus!). She had this done because her peiods were very heavy and extremly painfull. Good luck with whatever you decide : )

I had this procedure in 1999 and no problem. It was uncomfortable but nothing drastic. I was having 3 month long periods and since our family was complete, it seemed like the logical answer. Since the ablation, I spotted no more than 2 days in a row and only at the most - twice a year. In the last year and a half I haven't even done this (age may have something to do with it). The dr. said sometimes a place in the uterus may not be affected by the ablation and when you ovulate it can bleed. The bleeding was very minor.

Hope this helps and good luck.

I was about to post a question about this. My friend just had it done on Saturday. She has had VERY heavy periods since having her son 3 months ago... so she decided this was a good route to go. She was up and around later that day, and did most of her normal activities. She said she was a little uncomfortable, but once the pain killers kicked in, she was great!

I know you don't want to have it done if you want more kids... other than that... I'm kind of waiting to see how things go for her!

Mine was 18 months ago and it saved my life. I was having a full 7-8 day period every two weeks. I was tired, stressed and couldnt get off the couch half the month and the other half I was trying to recover and prepare myself to do it again in two weeks. I was bleeding so hard that tampons were a waste unless I wanted to spend five minutes in the bathroom changing them every hour on the hour. I was extreamly miserable. I had always had heavy periods, but this was crazy. I was ready for a full hysterectomy at 28 years of age when my dr suggested this. I thought he was crazy. There was no way this could work. But, I had maxed out my insurance for the year so it was going to be a free proceedure for me so why not. I woke up in terrible pain, much worse than my two c sections, they kept giving me morphine and it wasnt working, finally a dose of Stadol did the trick. I had breakthrough bleeding everyday for almost 6 weeks, almost just like after having the babies. Then I was done. I went four months with no period, then slowly one or two days a month. I can still tell when I am "on my period" because I go through the mood changes and the PMS but at least I am not bleeding like I was and I can get up and take care of my kids now! It is also great not to have to worry about birth control, between my tubes being tied and the ablation, I dont have to answer that annoying when was your last period question anymore.

Hi C.,

I had one done last June and it wasn't bad, I was told that I probably wouldn't have periods, which I didn't for about 4 months but now I am having them, but they are regular and only last about 3-5 days. I'm not having any of the break thru bleeding or irregular bleeding I was having before. About a day of recovery and you will be back on your feet, just can't do any heavy lifting of course! Good luck and let us know how things go!

My friend had this done due to heavy periods etc. She has had break through periods and now full on periods and it has been less than one year. My friend's dr is recommending a hysterectomy. I think that is pretty drastic not to have a period but....
Blessings!!!

Hi C.,
All the other responses said they had good results and if you get it done I really hope you do too. I had a friend who had it done last October and hers didn't turn out so well--they didn't get everything out so it caused all sorts of problems (infections) in her body and had to get 2 other surgeries done (including a partial hysterectomy 2 months ago) to correct the first one and she is still recovering very slowly from all the damage the first procedure/ablation. I don't mean to scare you, but she found out from her present doctor now that it is normal procedure NOT to go back and check to make sure they get everything out. SO, I would make sure that your doctor is very reputable and ask if they go back to check if everything was taken out. If you want to know my friend's current doctor (he actually goes back in there to check) email me so I can ask her. Email: ____@____.com. I truly hope your ablation goes well. Good luck.

Hi C.,

After years of very irregular, long and extremely heavy periods I saw a gyno who went through different options for me and I decided on an ablation. The procedure went very smoothly and while I was a bit sore for a couple of days the painkillers meant I was no worse off than when I had a period. It has been nearly a year since I had my ablation and I have been getting progressively better and better periods and am now at the point where I only get very light bleeding for a couple of days, 5 max. While I had hoped for the best case scenario of no periods ever again, the improvement I have had and the difference it has made was well worth it especially since it is so much less invasive than a hysterectomy which was my only other option. Good luck with your decision and I hope this helps.

Kind regards
T.
