Just wondering if you or anyone that you know has gotten pregnant on the mirena IUD. I have a lot of symptoms and am waiting on my blood test results. I'm trying no to freak out and I am probably just getting sick or something. I know it's more than 99% effective but it would just be my luck! I was on antibiotics and I don't think it can reduce the IUD's effectiveness, but I don't know for sure. Anyone have any info for me? I've heard it can happen but is rare.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone! I got my results and it's negative. Thank my lucky stars. This office is so rude thank goodness I don't have to deal with them for the next 9 months!

It is possible to get pregnant with an IUD but VERY rare. Antibiotics do not affect the IUD's effectiveness (the only reason they affect birth control pills in some cases is that they interfere with your body's metabolism of the drugs). Mirena has progesterone (levonorgestol I think) which is also a hormone of pregnancy so it may be that your symptoms are coming from the hormones in the IUD. Good luck.

As a fellow Mirena user, I'm just curious if you got your blood test back and are indeed pregnant. That would certainly scare me as a mother of 3 who is also done having children and just recently got the Mirena. Hope everything works out the way you want it to. Let us know.

J. -- I would check to see if the IUD is there. You can feel the string if it is. That IUD is supposed to be the most effective form of birth control due to the Barrier and the hormones.

I read that most cases of pregnancy with IUD are tubal.

Let me knwo what you find out I would be interested to know.

I don't know of this happening personally, but when I was getting my IUD put in, my OB was telling me about a patient who got pregnant toward the end of her IUD...
Stay calm. Unfortunately, we can't plan everything in life, one way or another. What's meant to be will be :)
