My son is 10 years old and he has a really big stomach. It sits up high and way out like he's pregnant. The rest of his body is bareley that big. the rest of his body is small like an average kid, it doesn't make sense. we've spoken to 2 doctors who put him on a nutrition plan because they said it was fat so we did that, we also do excercise, cut down eating habits, I gave him fletchers laxative, because my mother said he could need a good cleaning and nothing is working. He's embarrased around other children and I try to tell him that he is like everyone else. Last Holloween he was spiderman and some big kids said "look at that fat kid" my son wanted to go home, he was so upset and I hurt too, because I don't know why this is happening to him. I checked online about sydromes that could cause this, I've even read that detoxing can cure this. I really don't know what to do, and I hate to see my child walk around with this complex. I'm afraid that his condition is a misdiagnosis, I think something is wrong. It looks abnormal and miserable. can anyone help me out with what I should do next?

What can I do next?

Hi M.,
My heart goes out to you and your son. I can imagine how you feel and hurt for him.

I would suggest asking your doctor for a referral to a gastroentorologist ( don't know if I spelled that right). It may be nothing and at least then you will have the piece of mind that a specialist has checked him. I would make sure they did a MRI or ultrasound to see what is there instead of just a physical exam.

Go with your instincts mom...

Hi M.,

A pediatric specialist sounds like a good idea. Has he ever had problems with his spine? I assume that any bone structure abnormalities would have been caught earlier during checkups with his ped but it's just a thought. (A far-fetched one, so please don't worry).

Also, I can sympathize with him about the mean kids. I had a very prevalent scar on my face as a child (still do, but it's not so bad now) and was made fun of alot. "Frankenstein's kid", they called me. Kids can be really mean. I don't know if he would understand this or not but tell him that they make fun of other people because they need something to make them feel better about themselves.

Good luck!

You're his mom, and if YOU feel that there may be something wrong, then you have every right to pursue the issue. Like the other poster said, I would suggest a pediatric gastroenterologist. Some sort of imagine studies may also be in order. If nothing is found, and they determine that it is a weight problem, then at least you've pursued other avenues.

take him to a gastro dr.

I have a question what nutrition plan are you using for your son?
Maybe I could help you with that .

I kind of know how you feel not with the stomach but the way my daughter was acting i knew something wasn't right from the time she was first born but it took 3 years to get it noticed and a problem to be found and now we are working on the "fix" What i am tring to say is that if you think that something isn't right you are right...keep taking him to a different doctor until you get an anwser...try a pediatric gi.
