Has Anyone Ever Used Passport Health?

I took my son, Nathaniel, to his 3 year pediatric checkup early last month. During the visit, they asked us if we wanted our son to have a flu shot. He hadn't had one before, so they said it would have to be split up into two doses. We said ok, and they administered his first dose, and the second was scheduled for February 9.

Well, the pediatrician's office called today, and told us they were out of flu vaccines and were not going to be getting any more. They referred us to a facility called Passport Health. Has anyone ever been to this facility before? They have an office in Plano, and apparently they are not a pediatric facility; they are a health facility for travelers, whose purpose is to provide vaccines and health care needs to travelers.

I just don't know if I should go there, or if I should seek another doctor. Have you ever taken your child there? If you've used their services, can you tell me if your experience was favorable or unfavorable? Please, if you are against vaccinating children, do not respond with a long lecture. Childhood vaccines do not cause autism.

Thank you so much for your help.

N.

Hi N.. It sounds like you may be going to the Pedi I used to work for in Plano. It was the norm for them to not have enough flu vaccine and refer their patients to Passport Health. I do not have personal experience with the place but I can tell you that a lot of patients went their and had no problems whatsoever. If you are still concerned you can try the health dept. to get the second dose or go to a local pharmacy. However, call before you go because not all pharmacies will vaccinate children that young. Kudos to you for getting him the flu shot and being so outspoken on the safety and neccessity of childhood vaccinations!

My pediatrician ran out after just one dose, also. She said we could go to Pediatric After Hours in Plano, or anywhere else that still had the vaccine (CVS, Walgreens, Trinity Pharmacy in Carrollton). She did tell me that one dose was better than none, but I should try to find the second. I don't think that vaccines directly cause autism. I think that there have to be several factors in place, and the vaccines could possibly be icing on the cake. Either way, vaccines are just too important to run that risk. It frustrates me that my kids are around unvaccinated children. My kids should be safe, but I think it is a slippery slope we are going down allowing kids to go unvaccinated. However, I'm sure if my child had autism, I'd be desperately looking for something to blame...

N., my only reservation would be that they may only have the WITH PRESERVATIVE flu vaccine rather than the preservative -free usually used for children. But, I am with you that there is not enough evidence to support vaccines causing autism (while there is a ton of evidence supporting the benefits of vaccines), I still shy away from vaccines with preservatives. Good luck! Let us know if you go there what you thought.

My husband and I have used Passport Health for several trips and have found them very nice. I do not remember going in an exam room for my shots but had them in the office which might be better for children. One place my daughter got a flu shot was Texas Pharmacy at Parker and Independence. The lady there was wonderful and explained how to relax to my preschooler. It was a great experience.

I am not going to post a long reply but just mention to you that YES vaccines do trigger autism and I am living proof. Please do not make a statement like that when you haven't done your research. I do want to tell you if you are so gung ho in vaccinating your child with the flu shot, please find one without Thirmersal.

I went to the Passport Health office at 635 and Hillcrest so my kids and I could get the FluMist (nose spray) vaccine instead of the shot after my pedi ran out of mist. The nurse was very nice. It was just the one nurse in an office. The FluMist cost $50 each. I'm sure the shot would have been cheaper, but the mist has no thimerasol, and my kids (5 and 8) requested up the nose rather than the shot. I'm not sure how old they have to be to get mist; my youngest was 20 months this fall when we got vaccines, so he had to get the shot.

Call around. Maybe a pharmacy near you has the vaccine and would be more convenient for you.

Good Luck.
