Has Anyone Ever Gotten a DNC or Taken the Drug to Induce Miscarriage??

I just found out that I had what they call a missed miscarriage, where the embryo never fully developed and I have to end the pregnancy by either having a DNC or take a drug to induce the bleeding and expel all of the tissue left in the uterus. I am having a hard time deciding, I hate surgery so was thinking about taking the drug. Has anyone ever taken this drug, and how bad was the cramping? How long before you can resume normal activies and feel normal again. I believe it is called misoprostol. Please give me your opinions as I have to decide by Monday.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I decided to take everyones advice and went with the D&C. I had the surgury on Friday and everything went great! The recovering is going well, not much pain just a little cramping. I'm so glad I did the surgury, the drugs and doing it the natural way seemed a little scary. Thanks again everyone for the great advice!

Hi L.,
Well, I also had a blighted Ovum...and being stubborn and anti-surgery...I opted to let it pass naturally. I survived it, however it was a long night, lost lots of blood, had pretty bad cramps. I was excited the next morning b/c the bleeding was almost all gone so I thought all came out, but the Dr could not see if everything got out, so he still had to do the D&C. The D&C was nothing..seriously...I woke up as they rolled me into recovery, was not in pain (just took advil), was awake all day until bedtime...really...it was like nothing happened. It could not have been more flawless and a heck of a lot smoother than the ordeal I signed up for the night before. I will tell you that if you pass it on your own...if you feel faint..they say to come in. I did not know this and did not come in, but got a lecture once they found out.

Hang in there and by all means contact me if you need to talk or help deciding.....

One more thing...the Dr. told me to have three periods before trying again, well, eight weeks later---oh, maybe it was six weeks later, we were expecting again...all was well with that one. So, be careful...I think there are added risks if you get pregnant that quick after a miscarriage.

Hi L.,

I am so sorry for your loss!! We miscarried twins last year - same as Heather below with blighted ovums. We opted for the DNC as well to get it over with quickly and not drag it out any longer than need be. The surgery was easy and recovery was easy as well. I experienced heavy cramping for a few days following the surgery but that was it.

If you need to talk, please feel free to send me a message. I'm here!! And good luck with whatever you decide, I know neither choice is an easy one for you.

L.,
First of all I'm sorry for your loss. I have also had 2 miscarriages. With the 1st I was 6-7 weeks and the heart stopped beating. I opted to let it pass on its own. That was the biggest mistake. The cramping and contractions that came with it was totally awful, and even after all of that when they did an ultrasound to see if everything was gone, it wasn't, so I had to do a DNC anyway. My second was similar to yours a blighted ovum I believe its called it just stops growing. They asked me what I wanted to do, and after my 1st experience, I opted for a DNC and ASAP! It wasn't bad, I wasn't even sore not one bit. I don't know about the drugs, but if you choose that route, make sure they give you heavy duty pain meds, b/c those contractions are awful.

I am sorry for your loss and having this hard decision to make in its wake.

My mom had a miscarriage without DNC (many years ago) and she says it was awful. When I had a missed miscarriage, my doctor recommended a DNC and Mom seconded it. It was scary to go through with surgery but probably better as they did mention that they would have to do a DNC if things didn't fully clear the natural way. The recovery was a non-event. The emotional recovery took a little more time but we got pregnant within 6months with our first child. Hang in there.

Good Luck.
