Hello. I was just diagnosed a few weeks ago w/an irritable uterus. I was just wondering if anyone has ever dealt w/an irritable uterus and if so what you experienced through your pregnancy. I'm just a little scared and unsure of what to expect. I am at high risk for pre-term delivery anyway, so this doesn't help my stress level any! I have contractions, cramping and pain everyday and I just don't know what to expect in the coming weeks. I am currently 27 weeks and have been to the hospital twice for contractions and the second time I had to have a shot of Terbutaline to get them to stop. Good stories or bad I would love hear from you, just so I can get an idea of what to expect. I want to be prepared, I have adult ADD and an anxiety disorder so preparing is the best thing for me, I hate the unknown. Thanks!!

What can I do next?

I had an irritable uterus with my 2nd pregnancy. I started having contractons at about 18 weeks. I couldn't even walk up the stairs without having cramping or contractions. My midwife suggested that I wear a prenatal craddle. It is a special type of pregnancy belt. When I started wearing it I could go back to my normal life again without having any contractons and had a full term baby. It is worth a try.
I will include a link to give a better idea what this thing is.

I didn't have irritable uterus but wanted you to know that having contractions are normal for any pregnancy some people just don't feel them as much as you do. With both of my "normal" pregnancies when I did the stairs or walked a lot etc... I could feel my contractions -- tummy tight, shortness of breath, heart beating faster etc... so don't take that as a sign of something wrong. Contractions at all weeks is normal. You are going to make it! God bless.

I had uterine irritability with my twins. I measured full term at 29 weeks, and had cramping and what felt like contractions until my full term scheduled c-section.

Calm down, drink your water, and rest.

I had to go to the hospital w/ contractions, they kept giving me terbutaline, and for some reason, the labwork was really slow. I was dehydrated, and that's why the terbutaline wasn't working. Once they started IV fluids, the contractions stopped.

Keep hydrated, and get as much rest as you can w/ a 4.5 year old at home. I had 20 month at home when I was in that situation.

Yes, I also had an irritable uterus. I was a high risk pregnancy due to twins but I also expreinced preterm labor starting at 26 weeks, I was put on complete bed rest for the remainder of my pregnancy. I was monitored weekly for my contractions and was given terbutaline twice. I noticed the more I was up and moving around the worst the contraction became so the best part for me was drinking tons of liquids and laying in bed. I did deliver early at 33 weeks but that was alot better than 26. My twins did just fine being delivered that early and are healthy almost 3 year olds now.

Good luck with your pregnancy sorry I couldn't be of more help but resting was really the best thing for me at that time.

Hi D.,

I have never heard of this before and fortunatly never had to deal with any complications through my pregnancy but, I am sorry to hear about all the stress you are experiencing. I just want to wish you all the luck and my prayers are with you that you will get through this and everything will be okay :) If you feel like the stress is building up, work on some breathing techniques or take a warm shower. When I was stressed I would go for a walk. Try to do something that is relaxing for your self. Keep us posted so we know everything is okay. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Take Care,
S.

I just went through the same thing with my 2nd child. I started having contractions at 22 weeks and had to go to the hosptial twice to find out what was causing it. They did end up telling me I had an irritable uterus and my contractions continued throughout the rest of my pregnancy. My doctor prescribed terbutaline pills to take as needed to slow my contractions down, which helped. She also advised me to eat more (especially protein like chicken) in addition to drinking juice (not just water). That did seem to help quite a bit. Also stay off your feet as much as possible. I ended up delivering at 37 weeks a beautiful healthy baby boy. The best advice I can give you is to keep monitoring the contractions and when they get to be 5 minutes apart consistently, call your doctor or go to the hospital so they can check you. Good luck.
