I do have thryod issues which are taken care of by meds. My prayers are with you and your family. I dont know about surgery, etc.
I had my thyroid removed 3 years ago after I was diagnosed with cancer, I am just looking for others who have had the same diagnosis and surgery. I have lots of questions and am wondering if other people are going through the same things

Strange that this question was in my email this morning. I already had my right side of my thyroid removed I now have to go in tomorrow and have the left side removed because of cancer. So I am out here about to go back in tomorrow for more surgery.
My sister has been going through the ups and downs of thyroid cancer for three years now. She had surgery to remove the thyroid, had a no-iodine diet, took radioactive pills, etc... About a year after the surgery, she had swelling in her neck. First they diagnosed it as mumps! Then the doctors decided that her saliva glands had scar tissue from the initial surgery and needed to be drained. Her levels (of the chemical the thyroid gives off) have repeatedly been high. Of course this is worrisome because it means there is still thyroid tissue (and cancer) somewhere in her body. Over this summer she has had catscans, blood tests, and most recently a PET scan. Fortunately the PET scan showed that the cancer has not spread to other parts of the body. It is in two lymph nodes which can be removed by surgery. She is in the process of determining whether she wants to have the surgery done in Charlotte, NC, where she's had the tests etc... or if she should go to Sloan hospital in NY which specializes in cancer surgeries. She has had many ups and downs worrying if the cancer has spread, etc... (I apologize that may have some of the technical terms confused.)
If you would like to email with her directly, send me a message and I'll get your email address to her.
Hello, My daughter had thyroid cancer when she was 14 years old. She had her thyroid removed and has had body scans and ultrasounds for the past 8 years. She is now 22 years old happily married and is a scientist for a research lab. She was the youngest person in the U.S. at that time to have had the surgery. She takes a thyroid hormone replacement and is doing just great. She had a wonderful surgon and her internist is tops.
Good luck to you. Live your life to the fullest and enjoy your children.
God Bless
No cancer, thankfully, but I had a thyroidectomy in Feb. for a multi-nodular thyroid; I'm still in the adjustment phase of being on the Synthroid--my TSH is still pretty high. Hope you get some answers...
F., in 2006 I had a total thyroidectomy due to a huge nodule on my thyroid that turned out not to be cancerous, but which was hiding a few tiny microcarcinomas (papillary). I'm glad I had the surgery because the nodule was affecting my thyroid hormone levels and making me feel awful. I had a problem-free surgery at Johns Hopkins with surgeon Martha Zeiger. Because the microcarcinomas were so small and nowhere near the margins, and because I was still nursing at the time (my son was 14 months old), I did not have radiation.
