Has Anyone Else Ever Experienced This?

Last night I had my almost 9 month old daughter in her highchair I gave her a teething cracker that she has had before and eaten with no problem. As I am making dinner I here her choking. She was crying while she was choking so I knew she was breathing but it was pretty in there. Instinct took over instead of better judgement and I scooped my finger in there and pulled the piece out. Not sure if it was my fingernail or the piece of cracker but something scratched somewhere in her mouth and her mouth was full of blood. It terrified me. I gave her a bottle with water and she has seemed perfectly fine since. Has anyone ever seen somethhing like this before?

What can I do next?

Nope, haven't experienced that - but it sounds like you handled it just right!!!

It might not have been YOU that scratched her - it could've been the cracker. If she's not bleeding anymore - you are good. If you see more blood today - call your pediatrician...although the mouth is the hardest thing to heal - because it's soooo wet in there!!!

YOU GO MOMMA!!! YOU DONE GOOD!!!

You did exactly what you were supposed to do. If you can get to it with your finger then that's what you do to get it out. You don't need to do a baby heimlich if you can get it out with less drama. You may have scratched her but the mouth is so vascular that it bleeds a lot with just a little cut/scratch. She's fine and you did what you needed to do. That's what is most important.

And add me to the not a fan list for those crackers. They break off in large chunks. Better off to give her cheerios to play/practice with.

I doubt it was your fingernail - that's too much blood for a small scratch. More likely it was the sharp edges of the cracker and her either trying to move it around or clamping down on it. She probably broke off or bit off too large a chunk.

Either way, there are a lot of blood vessels in the mouth so bleeding isn't unusual. Mix it with added saliva, and it looks like more blood that it really was. And, you quickly realized that she was crying and therefore still breathing - pretty good in a sudden situation - way to stay calm, Mama! And, of course, you did the right thing, and she's fine.

I'd probably try to find something else for her to chew on and practice eating with. She's growing, getting more confident, and having better motor skills, so she's probably doing more with a cracker she used to just suck on or gum around with.

You reacted the way anyone would! It was probably the teething cracker that scratched her and as others have mentioned, if she's not bleeding today you are probably fine. I would make sure to keep her hands clean and clean anything that goes in her mouth just to be on the safe side for a few days!

Yes - this happened with my daughter - about the same age. I took the box of teething crackers/cookies and threw them out!!! Maybe you scratched her when you pulled it out, maybe the cracker did that was lodged in there - either way, you got it out!

Throw away the teething crackers/biter biscuits! My son has a big piece break off in his mouth around the same age and was choking. He needed back blows to dislodge..... So scary. Stick to the small pieces of finger foods!
Glad things turned out okay for you and your daughter.
