Ladies:

Because mommas know about all sorts of things, not just about little ones, I thought I'd ask float this question about wood floors.

We bought an apartment, and the floors are frankly in bad shape. Having them professionally sanded and refinished is not an option. Any ideas on how to give them a really good deep clean and shine them up nicely? I'd prefer to do it "green" if that's an option.

Thanks a bunch.

What can I do next?

We have the same situation! We took out our area rugs, and the floors were a mess. We used "Holloway House" concentrated floor cleaner, and then "Holloway House Floor Shine" and they look fantastic.
It was just about an all day job. On hands and knees we scrubbed the floors with the floor cleaner. We had to go over them again and again. (I keep a pretty clean house, so I was totally grossed out)
We mopped on the Floor Shine and the floors like amazing!!

We bought the stuff at Ocean State Job Lot, for less than $6 a bottle. But I think you can find it most anywhere...Online perhaps?
Good Luck!

I agree with Marda. Murphy's Oil Soap is great! I am looking at my bottle right now and it says "98% naturally derived ingredients" and "Designed for the environment- recognized by the US EPA". It can't be used on unfinished floors, but let me tell you we have two small boys and this stuff really cleans the floor. The house smells clean after I wash the floors with it. Good luck!

You'll want to make sure your little ones keep their shoes/slippers on. We have the old oak floors, which we did sand and stain; but our son just recently got a big splinter in his foot from the floor. I used to use "Clean and Shine," but it never realy shined up the wood, because the wood is so dry that it just soaks everything up. I was wondering what kind of stuff the builders put on top of wood floors to give them that gloss?

We redid our hardword floors ourselves when we moved into our house. It was hard work - we rented the sander and then finished them off. We are NOT HANDY people either and it was not fun though! hahahah! But if you really want them done right, then do that...just be careful with the sander b/c it REALLY WORKS and you can really do damage! Hmm - probably not the advice you were looking for!

The wood floors in my house when I moved into it many years ago were in bad shape too. I cleaned them with Murphy's soap and then put a layer of paste was on them. They look better.

I don't know if Murphy's soap is green or not. I have noticed other brands of cleaner formulated for wood but not looked at their labels.
