I would like to put our pool up for my 5 year old daughter. My question is we have really bad well water and after a day the pool water turns orange. Any sugjestions on what to safely put in the water to keep it clear?

What can I do next?

There is a peroxide that you can put into the pool water that works like chlorine. If you want, I can get the information as this peroxide is specific for pools/hot tubs. Let me know.

The other thing is that next time you fill the pool, you can buy a filter that goes on the outside faucet to filter the water, which will eliminate/reduce the iron in the water.

Hope this helps.

We had the same problem. Then my husband decided to run a hose from the kitchen sink instead of the outside spout - don't know why. I guess the outside is not hooked up to the water softener and filter system, but it made all of the difference in the world.

T.- try running water from your sink. You probably have a filter or softener on your house but not the water that runs outside. So try a hose from your sink if you can. Adding chemicals or iron out may work, but you have to be very careful of the amounts in there so you don't hurt your child's skin. I'd really try getting the water from inside the house. Good luck.

see if your local fire department could come out and fill for a small fee.

If you are talking about a pool with a filter, then this is a very easy fix. We have the same issue. We fill ours from the outside tap (we don't have a softener at all). Once the pool is full, it is quite orange. There is a product called Sparkle Up (may have a different name from other manufacturers). It is a powder that you use to basically cake the filter. It then pulls out the iron as it passes through. You have to remove the filter, rinse it, and replace it and add more powder a few times, but within about a day to a day-and-a-half, our pool is CRYSTAL clear. And it stays this way all summer unless we lose a lot of water and need to refill significantly. Then we just repeat the procedure. It amazes me just how crystal clear the water gets. Good luck to you!

My sister-inlaw has bsd well water, and she had water brought in for her pool. However, I don't know how expensive that is. But it may be worth checking it out. Good luck.

If you have a water softener in your house you could fill it up with buckets of water from the house. Otherwise, there's no way I know of to get the iron out of the water unless you filter it. One possible way is to put an old sock over the end of the hose and put a rubber band around it to hold it on. This will catch a lot of the iron and act as a filter of sorts. In any event, the iron in the water won't do any harm. It just doesn't look good.
Good luck!

There are chemicals to balance the water and neutralize the metals. I'd recommend taking in a pool water sample to a local dealer and seeing what it would take to get the water into balance. I know BioGuard dealers have water testing labs, you just need to bring in a quart of water in a clean ziplock baggie (they also recommend to not let it set in the car all day, as it can change the readings - under an hour is ideal). I did a search on the BioGuard website and found this dealer near you:

Lifestyles Hotsprings & Spas
14465 N Us 27
De Witt, MI 48820
www.hotorcold.com
###-###-####

I worked at a swimming pool store for a few years when I was in school and we were also on a well, so I know it takes a little extra work in getting it balanced initially. However, once you get it situated, it's easier to maintain for the duration of the summer.

There may be other local dealers that carry other lines and offer water testing, which may be closer - I just figured that this would be a good place to start.

If this is a kiddie play pool, you might just ask them to test for metals and go with the spa line of chemicals (smaller qty) and try a little of the chemical recommended to neutralize that - see how it goes?

Best wishes!

T.,
My Aunt and Uncle have extremely hard and basically brown well water. They wanted to set up a pool this summer but were trying to figure out how with their water. They ended up having a pool expert come out and they bought a really nice water filter along with a pump and all the right chemicals. The water from the hose goes through the filter and out comes clean, safe, sparkling water. :) Call your local pool store, someone should be able to help you.

T., my question is it a kiddie pool or a regular pool or instaset pool? If it is a kiddie pool you could try the lemon juice or vinegar, both are weak acids. If it is larger than a kiddie pool, take a sample in a plastic bottle (clean) to your local pool store. The sample should be collected just before you take it in so that the chemical levels are accurate as they break down over time. The pool store can analyze the sample and tell you what to add to adjust the water.
I have regular pool and add water to it each year and always take a sample in at the begining of the year to get my water in balance.
Good luck

My mom always used a little lemon juice and table salt in ours, she discovered from a neighbor who used it to get his Military Whites clean in his laundry. I would assume it is safe for the pool too.

Lemon juice or vinegar...anything acidic will help minimize it.

Can you call your local fire dept. and bring in their tanker to fill your pool. This is a service and it may have a charge attached.

There are places you can order water from, for things like filling a pool. You should call a pool supply store and ask them-they'll know what to do.
