Ok Moms here goes my Husband and I tried for 7 yrs to get pregnant, so when we found out in Nov of 2008 we were pregnant we were so excited. Our son is the love of our lives and I just love being a Mom he is now 10 months old and I just found out today I'm pregnant with our second!! So yes we are over the moon with joy. However I got Gestational Diabetes during my first pregnancy at 28 weeks but our son was born healthy and happy. When our son was 6 months old I found out I have type 2 diabetes so with this being said I am so happy we are having another child we feel so blessed and I'm trying so hard not to worry so much about my pregnancy and having diabetes. But I'd be lying if I said I wasen't. The ob that delivered my son is a little to laid back for a nervous mommy such as myself, I need someone who thinks my being pregnant with diabetes is serious because it is!! Do any of you have a good high risk ob recommendation in the St.Charles, St. Louis area? Also does any one have any advice or experience with type 2 diabetes and pregnancy?? I would really appreciate it.
Thanks Again,
FS

You should not have an OB manage your type 2 diabetes (or gestational diabetes for that matter).

You should ask for a referral to an Endocrinologist and have them monitor your diabetes. You should have an Endocrinologist anyhow although your Primary Care provider should be able to manage your diabetes well on their end. In 8 years of being very involved with Diabetes treatment, I've yet to see an OB who was very proficient in its management.

You may also want a referral to a Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) through your local hospitals. You shouldn't have a problem finding one in your area. I have a friend who sold Diabetes products there for many years, and I'll see if she has any recommendations.

Don't be surprised if someone suggests insulin (if you're not already on it). Most diabetes drugs haven't been FDA approved in pregnancy. That being said, many have conducted studies but have not chosen to seek approval in the pregnant population.

Type 2 diabetes is much easier to manage during pregnancy than type 1 diabetes as a general rule. But, hormones are crazy things - especially pregnancy hormones, and you'll likely need to be a little more diligent.

The good news is that we've come a long way in understanding and treating type 2 and gestational diabetes in the past few years.

I had gestational diabetes with all my children (didnt' know with the first one) and then got type 2. I was put on insulin immediately when I took the glucose test with my second because my blood sugar was around 400! When I found out I was pg with #3 I called my dr and told them I wanted insulin now! I didnt' wait for the glucose test. I did happen to have an ob that was concerned with my diabetes and helped me with it while pregnant. Unfortuately for you, he is in Utah. I would suggest going to an endo for the diabetes and an ob for the pregnancy. The endo can help with the diabetes while pg (you're not the first preganct patient) and the OB can do his/her thing with the pregnancy. I know this will create more Dr's appointment for you but totally worth it for the baby. If you need someone to talk to, I've been through it. I understand and I'm available. Its so hard sometimes and so totally draining. But like I said before, so worth it when they put that healthy baby in your arms.

I agree about finding an endocrinologist. You will need one after the pregnancy anyway.
Good luck and God bless.

I didn't have gestational or Type 2 diabetes, but I did have a high risk pregnancy with twins. I went to Dr. Gilbert Webb at St. John's hospital in St. Louis and have only praises for him and his staff. I went 38 weeks under his care. They monitored me closely and made me feel secure throughout my pregnancy. Good luck!
