My 4 mo old ALWAYS has her hands in her mouth. Her doctor says shes not teething yet. Wondering what it is then and any way to stop her alittle. It makes her spit up more than usual!

What can I do next?

My daughter did the same thing when she was 3 1/2 - 4 months old....and guess what? Her ped said the same thing your ped said..."not teething yet"...well about a week later her first, (not one), but two teeth came in!! And since then she hasn't had her hands in her mouth nearly as often as she did then. Her hands in her mouth did cause her to spit up more but I'm not sure there is anything you can do about that. I'm very interested to see how this works out...keep me posted!

If she's not teething, she could just be enjoying the sensation. Maybe it feels good on her hands, or her mouth, or both. In any case, it will likely change as her interests change and she has more things too touch and hold - then, instead of her hands, all of these things will go into her mouth. I'm told it's part of the way babies experience new things.

She might be teething - my daughter's doctor has been wrong about that before. When my daughter was that age, she had her hands in her mouth all of the time! She never spit up from it, so I am not sure how to handle that.

they will do that, cuz its a sucking thing. She might be teethin but may not be.. But if you want to stop her from suckin on them a lot, try giving her some sucking toys or a wet washcloth, most kids love them. i have twin 16mnth old gurls n they loved suckin on their fingers, but we just gave them toys and washclothes and they didnt suck them much after we did that. so u can try that and see how that goes.

My almost 3 month old daughter does the same thing. She simply loves her hand and she has been drooling alot more also. I read in a book that at this age they do put thier hands in thier mouth because they enjoy the taste and texture and they are realizing that their hand is apart of them for the first time. Let me know how it goes.

Hi! I have a just turned 5 month old boy and he was the same exact way, even sometimes make himself gag, and yes the doc told me to "no, he's not teething". 5 days after we left the doc (4 mon well baby) out came 2 teeth! they are on the bottom. I think it is just a natural reaction and I haven't found anything or a way to keep his hands out of his mouth, except the pacifier. I just keep sticking it back in every time he spits it out and that helps a little. He also has these toys I got for him they are soft, like stuffed animals, but made for baby(from the organic under the nile company) and he LOVES to have that in his mouth. He doesn't care to much for the teethers or hard toys, just the soft ones. But even with this the drool is a whole different story! good luck and just stick it out :)
