My 1yr old, and 3yr old just came down with Hand, foot, and mouth disease. Any tips or home remedies? We've been to the doctor because my 1 yr old wasn't taking any fluids. He's taking some fluids now, not as much as usual though. Any suggestions on making the kids more comfortable/soothed?

Thank you so much

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the tips. The kids are better, but mommy is coming down with it now. Luckily it seems like we all had a mild case (only in mouth and throat).

My son just had it a few months ago- he was only 11 months old! It was terrible. We had to feed him for two days with a syringe until he could eat and then it was only stage 1 and 2 foods b/c of the blisters in his mouth. This virus is very uncomfortable for them...my son has never been so restless or fussy EVER! Some advice: do not give the little one any fruits that are more acidic, I stuck to vegetables that were more bland in taste which seemed to help him eat. Also those little dissolvable puff snacks seemed to also work better b/c they can still chew relatively well as long as they do not hit a blister (and you'll know it)...I asked the doctor about what could be done to ease the discomfort and they said Ibrofen...which we gave him religously! This did seem to help..popsicles was nice too...be careful with oragel though it can burn the sores! Good luck- luckily the discomfortness only lasted a few days but the rash lasted a week.

Just Ibuprofin and lots of TLC from you. When my youngest got this at around 1 it was so horrible-and seemed to last forever! He stopped binky and bottle b/c of it. All he wanted to do was to be held. I was SO worried about him not getting enough fluids.

I actually just got over HFM myself and it is not pleasant! My throat hurt like crazy and I was DEAD tired. So be careful yourself not to get it. Nothing worse than being a sick caregiver.

My son had at about the same age. Our doctor suggested a little mylanta. It helped coat the throat. You would have to check the dosage. It really worked.

My son recently had this. Our ped rec's Motrin round-the-clock. Thankfully, the sores in his mouth were not severe so eating/drinking wasn't a problem. The worst part for him was the foot blisters. I ended up putting the "Magic Swizzle Mouthwash" they prescribed him on his blisters. It is benadryl, maalox and lidocaine.
Avoid carbonated beverages and let them eat popscicles and jello and smoothies, etc. (Although for some reason my son didn't want any dairy/ice creamy stuff--just freezer pops, popsicles, etc.
Poor things--hope they're better soon!

My son came down with it when he was about 6 months old and since I'd never had it before, I came down with it, too. We had very mild cases. Except for a few blisters on hands and feet you'd never know there was anything wrong. Popsicles are a good way to keep up fluids.

Popscicles. It'll keep them hydrated and it will help with the pain of putting things in their mouths. Good luck.
