hi M., Didn't his ped give him medicine for that, He probably got it in daycare it is highly contageous, and if he got it in daycare it means the provider allowed a chld to come in there sick, I do not allow kids to come to daycare if they have anything that is contageous, and then I make them get a daycare clearence bfore I allow them to come back, babies get this, and easly pass it on to other babies. Get it treated if you haven't already, and don't take him back to daycare until it's gone, he will just spread it around, and then eventually it will come back to him again, it the provider is allowing kids to come into daycare contageous. my daughter had it at 13-14months. we dont know how she got it (shes not in a daycare or anything like that). her case was pretty mild. what i did was give her infants tylenol (because her feet were very sore from the sores along with her mouth). also it seemed to itch her and so i got the ok to give her 1/2 a tspn of childrens benadryl (morning and night). as she started to clear up i sanatized and washed all her toys, bedding crib everything she came in contact with. i also heard that the virus could stay in their bodies for like 2 months and that its very contagious!. what i would do is have your sons daycare put a sign up stating that the illness is going around. also make sure that the daycare is cleaning and sanatizing the toys and furnature everynight. theres not much you can do for the illness aside from letting it run its course. i hope your lil one is better soon. good luck!!!

This is tough as it can circulate through a childcare facility over and over.. usually, once you get it, you don't get it again but obviously in your son's case he did. You can't treat it with medicine, as you probably know already - just keep him comfortable. Here is a good article I found that may give you some helpful info.

** To add to Julie's post - Yes, this is very contagious but not all kids have symptoms so a daycare provider/teacher/parent, etc.. can expose a child to other children without knowing.

Hope he feels better soon,
M.

I work at a preschool and this illness does come around every so often. Unfortunately when kids are placed in daycare instead of being home, they get all kinds of cooties multiple times- Especially at this young age when babies are mouthing everything and on the move.
If you must have him in a daycare, check on their sick policy as well as sanitation guidlines and that they are being properly followed.
How often are toys cleaned? Soiled toys per state law must be removed and cleaned and sanitized before put out again. What are the handwashing habits like for the teachers and the children? Wash his hands and yours before you leave his room.
Are proper steps (gloves, changing pad paper cover, handwashing-child and adult) being taken during diaper changes? look for signs of cross contamination.
What product is used to clean and sanitize? Make sure pacifiers aren't shared and that bottles are stored properly to prevent another baby grabbing it and taking a sip.
Watch about nose wiping too. Not sharing tissues or wiping faces with shared washcloths, etc.
An infant room requires tons of cleaning. It's easy for teachers to get lazy and let the cleanliness slide.
