Hand Foot and Mouth - West Des Moines,IA

My daughter was diagnosed with Hand, foot and Mouth disease yesterday. I am questioning the diagnosis. My daughter has a rash all over her body, tiny red dots some of them raised. They don't seem to itch or both her at all. They do appear on her palms and the bottom of her feet, but not exclusively. None of them are blistered. There are none in her mouth. Everything I have read about the disease lists painful sores in the mouth as one of the symptoms and blistering rash on hands and feet. Anyone have this same diagnosis without the mouth sores or blisters of any kind? Could they be coming later? Thanks Moms!

What can I do next?

My daughter had it a couple years ago, many kids at her daycare got the mouth sores and some pretty bad cases. She only got a few red dots on her hands, I don't remember any blisters in her mouth at all.

When my kids had it a few years ago they just had the rash. Never blistered. Fevers and no cancker sores that I could see or they complained of. Like any virus it's never "text book".

Be thankful it is only on the hands and feet. My son had it...first the high fever hit, then the mouth sores started, then the rash on the hands and feet.

My son would just lay on me and cry and drool...he wouldn't even swallow his own saliva. Then the blisters in his mouth started to open up and he was drooling blood. The would tell me just to give him Tylenol or Motrin for pain. He was so miserable and I was too. I would not wish that on anyone.

I finally discovered that if I used a small mesh teething bag (made for kids to gum fruits) full of crushed ice and give him a small dish of cold water to dip the ice into and then suck on it. He would get some liquid in and then could take his medicine and a few bites of yogurt, etc.

Pray the mouth sores pass you by...HUGS!!

If they are not in her mouth I would lean more towards chicken box if they are all over her body.

When our daughter had it the spots showed up right away but it seems like it took a couple of days for them to blister. I could never see spots in her mouth, but she did quit nursing cold turkey so they may have been there. She continued to eat and drink from a sippy cup fine. The worst was that she had blisters in her diaper area. Anytime her diaper was the slightest nit wet she would really cry. It obviously hurt. The worst part was over in about a week.

My son had an amoxicillin rash (reaction to antibiotic), which came about 5 days after taking the antibiotic. Little red dots all over body, some raised - hands and feet too, but not on the face or neck or mouth. Went away after we stopped the antibiotic.

It also depends on how old your daughter is - my daughter had a baby rash - no reason and went away after a couple of weeks, when she was I think 2 weeks old.

My daughter had hand foot and mouth when she was 2, and yes it was kind of blistery looking big raised dots in patches - only on palms and soles of feet and in the mouth - tongue and gums I think. And they are very painful to touch.

My daughter experienced Hand Foot and Mouth about 2 years ago, when she was almost 1 year old... She never had any sores or blisters in her mouth or around the mouth area, but did have red "bumps" on other areas of her body. (They did not itch.) Please note that in our case her fever lasted for 6 days straight , we tried everythng to get it to go away, but it always came back after the mediccation (Tylenol, Motrin) wore off. Her's was a very bad case, including vomiting twice during the entire sickness. Unfortunatley, then I ended up catching the virus from her and although I never vomited, it was one of the most horrible experinces of my life. My body was so sucked out of energy and and I felt worse than even the worst flu you could imagine. :(

My son had it when he was 9 months old. He had some blisters on palms of his hands and soles of his feet and just one in this mouth. I'd never had it as a child, so of course I came down with it too with a few blisters on my hands and feet. We never had a temperature, and the blisters were not itchy or painful at all. We were lucky. Some people have a horrible time with it.

HFMD is actually caused by a GROUP of viruses...not just one. If you manage to make it through without the mouth sores, count yourself lucky. They usually come after the fever. It is highly contagious, but not all that dangerous these days. The infected person can be contagious for WEEKS.

My daughter had it twice in 12 months--two different viruses. One with mouth sores, one without.

My kids are going through this. The 6 year old had it first. Said her mouth hurt. Had a fever of 103.7, but has not gotten the rash. My 9 year old got it next. Fevers and miserable sore throat. A few spots under her toes. complained about leg and jaw pain. My 8 year old was next. Fever. Bad sore throat. and now has the rash...so far just on her legs. Looks different for each. Fever and loss of appetite seemed to be the common symptom. Each of them slept most of the time until the fever broke. By the way, I think we got it at the swimming pool. Please keep them home for a while!

All 3 of my kids ages 5, 3 & 1 had it last week.. All of them ONLY had it in their mouth & no where else.. They were red bumps w/ white heads on them in the back of their throats. My daughter had them also on the roof of her mouth & my lil' guy had them also as just red bumps in his inner lips as well. So count yourself lucky i guess. All mine had sky rocketed fevers of 103.4 or 103.7 they had eye pain and loss of appetite. I had to hold the lil' one down & syringe him water, clear liquids every 15 mins so he wouldn't dehydrate.. But the only good thing is, is that they usually only last a few days so hopefully it should pass soon for you. Good Luck

Hi T.,

My friend's daughter just went through this. Her daughter started out with a rash and fever, then the blisters on the hands and feet, and just some in the mouth...on her palate. It is highly contagious and she was told that the blisters/sores on will open up and crust over, and that is the time when the child is no longer contagious.

Hope your little lady gets wells soon!

HFaM can start in the diaper area and spread to the legs and torso and arms. They also get spots on their hands and feet and mouth. You do not have to get them in all these places to have it. Everyone is different and will break out differently. Just make sure you wash your hands and hers and everyone else in the house as it spreads like wild fire. And when adults get it, it usually is worse. This can last for weeks and you can unfortunately get it again. Hope this helps, and take care...

Yes, the lesions appear at different times. The mouth sores were the last ones to appear when my son contracted it. So sorry to hear this, as I know it's a terribly uncomfortable illness for both the kid and the family who is caring for the kid.

Read this. It is from the CDC and explains everything fairly well. A friends child was diagnosed with it today and I looked it up because my son was exposed all weekend. I found it very helpful.

Hi there....both my boys had hand foot and mouth (6yrs and 4 yrs.) Our 6 year old got it first....with sores in his mouth that were really painful. I check his hands and feet before we got in the car to go to the doctor and there was not a single bump to be found. By the time we got to the clinic 15 minutes, and I finished telling the Dr that his mouth hurt, but nothing else anywhere, the Dr flipped his palms over and they were COVERED with bumps/sore. Just that quickly. Our 4 year old got it about 2 days later (as expected) and he only got a few bumps on his hands and few on his feet, and nothing in his mouth that I noticed or that bothered him. Exact same bumps, just not as prevelant. Also, my 6 year old got a pretty big fever (104) and my 4 year old just had a mild one (100/101) Neither of my boys said they itched, which is a good thing, because that would be just awful. Hope she feels better soon!

My daughter was diagnosed with hand foot and mouth about 6 months ago and I swore it was misdiagnosed too. She just had the little bumps on her palms and bottoms of her feet. She had no other symptoms. After first doubting, I considered myself lucky that those were all the symptoms we had..

my daughter had it, but thank god, also only on her hands and feet. I believe its because she didnt stick them in her mouth all the time. The best thing to do is keep her as clean as possible and try not to let her suck on hands or feet so it doesnt spread to her mouth. I've seen kids where it was mostly in the mouth, and am very thankful that my little girl didnt have it that bad.
