Hi Mama's,
I have a 16 mo. old daughter who just recently started biting her hand when she gets mad. She will scream and cry and then start biting herself. I have tried to redirect her to no avail. I was wondering if anyone else has had this experience and how they were able to stop it from happening. What do you think could be the reason behind this?

Thank you in advance for all you input and help!!

What can I do next?

I suspect she's doing it for this reason: Because she can! LOL

Let her bite her hand. She'll stop. It's a way to express her anger. Most likely a phase and she'll tire of it soon enough.

My daughter pulled out her own hair and bit her arm during temper tantrums. She stopped doing it eventually but you may very well end up with a fireball on your hands like we do.

I agree with Denise. She is probably doing it because it justifies the kind of attention she's trying to get. The less you pay attention to it, very likely the less she'll do it. Our 3.5 year old started hitting himself on the head last night when Skyping with Grandma and Grandpa. He was overly tired and being completely silly. The more attention he got from it, the more he did it.

Eventually, she'll realize it doesn't feel good and will stop doing it (keep your fingers crossed it's sooner vs. later).

My daughter started doing that to, however her bites were not hard enough to hurt her and she quickly ut grew it. If it is really concerning you try having something nearby to hand her when she gets mad and tell her to bite it instead. Not only will that help her stop biting herself it will teach her to redirect her anger. It may take few times for her to take what you are giving her as we all know repetition is what teaches them. Good luck.
