could she be a mummy (rolled up in hardened tolilet paper from head to toe) walking scarily on a crutch? It could be fun...
My landlord's daughter is in a leg brace for the next two months. She dislocated her knee cap. She is a high-functioning down syndrome 13-yr old girl. I don't know if parents plan to let her trick or treat or not, but I know for sure she wants to dress up. Any ideas to tie in her outfit with her leg brace? I suggested if they find a wheelchair, she could be an old grandma (curlers in her hair, flour powdered on her hair to make it white, pair of bi-focals resting on her nose, big flowery dress). I don't think they have a wheelchair though. Funds are limited - but I welcome any and all ideas to give her parents. THANKS in advance!
***I Googled the movie Saved with terms like "wheelchair" and "roller skate" and can't find a picture of it. I love the other ideas. I welcome more and more!
I love all of your ideas. Ultimately, it's up to her mom and stepdad since she'll be with them on that Sunday (not with her dad - my landlord). She wants to be a princess, but then today was wearing my son's pirate hat and sword and looked absolutely adorable. I told her she looked like a peg leg pirate - then an hour later I see that two of you posted that idea. Wonderful. She liked the idea of being a pirate. I told her she could wear all pink and be a pirate princess. They have pirate accessories at the Dollar store nearby, so perhaps mom will spring for that. Unfortunately, mom nor dad seem very enthused to do anything for her for Halloween,' so they may not take any of y'alls suggestions. They may also tell her she has to stay off her leg. Her dad told me that mom nor stepdad will probably be willing to tote her around in a wheelchair nor a wheelbarrow. I guess dad doesn't want to do it either. I think dressing up as royalty and being sported around is her style. She likes princess stuff.
Will post a final "so what happened" after Halloween to let you know what she ultimately did if you care to check back. Thanks for all your suggestions!
----- So what Happened? ----
I saw the girl Sunday. Dad was planning on taking her back to her moms like he always does on Sundays. I asked him about Halloween "Well it's their mom's turn to do Halloween. I'm not doing it this year. I've done it the past 3 years. Mom's not going to walk around trick-or-treating with her." So neither parent wanted to deal with going trick-or-treating, so I think the poor girl had to stay home. I feel bad for her. But at least I tried my best getting some cheap and easy costume design ideas for her. I have ideas now for the next kid with a leg brace on.

How about the Tin Woodman from the Wizard of Oz? Get a plastic funnel and spray paint it silver and use elastic to make it into a hat (like a party hat, where the elastic goes under the chin comfortably). A cardboard box, also spray painted silver with holes cut out for her head and arms could be the body. Google a photo of the Tin Woodman for ideas on things like buttons, and his heart, which could easily be drawn on with a Sharpie or paint. For her legs and arms, have her wear gray sweatpants and sweatshirt (find them at a Goodwill or similar thrift store). Or use shiny duct tape to wrap her sweatshirt sleeves in. A little silvery makeup on her face (cheap silver eye shadow) and she'll be a stiff legged rusty Tin Woodman! Really the only expense would be a used gray sweatshirt and pants, a can of spray paint and a cheap funnel (auto stores would have big ones). Have her say "oil can" in that squeaky voice instead of "trick or treat" !!
And by the way, a long time ago, one Halloween my brother and I had the chicken pox and couldn't go out. We dressed up anyway, but stayed safely away from kids. A neighbor (a grown man) took a pillow case and went to all the nearby houses and explained that we were housebound and asked for a treat for us. He knocked on our door, came in when my parents invited him in, and dumped the entire overflowing bag of treats on the floor! We were so excited and my parents were so grateful. So even if she can't go out, you can go to a few houses for her, or ask someone to bring a spare bag for treats for her. Tell her that's the coolest trick ever! To have treats delivered!!
it dose not have to incorprate the wheel chair as part of the out fit. i saw a bride design a dress while she is in a wheel chair. the train of her dress was attached to the back rest. if she wanted to be mother nature she can put flowers, leaves etc on the wheels. if she wanted to be rocken eighties...put glownecklases in the wheels...it looks super cool. could she still sit in a wagon? or even put a top on a wagon and let it be a "horse"? i say she should be anything she wants to be wheel chair or not. she can be a basket ball player who stays in a wheel chair. you could put a desk top (card board with a short table cloth so it wont get caught in the wheels ) across the arm rest area and she could be a teacher, secertary, college student, judge, or make it into a key board and she could be a rocker.
I was just thinking about a pirate with a peg leg too!
Have her be a patient....Put her in a gown, make her hair all crazy, even put "makeup" for a bruise on her face or eyebrow.. Get an ace bandage and wrap it around both of her wrists...
Royalty pulled in a cart/wagon.
My fav wheelchair costume ever was from the movie Saved! (he was a rollerskate).
Another wheelchair option that comes to mind (with leg sticking straight out) would be a battering ram. It would be double cute if dolls could be dressed up as knights/soldiers and attached to each side.
Would she be open to a gory costume? Don't know how high functioning she is. One year in high school the cheerleaders all went as a bus accident. They wore old torn up uniforms, fake blood and all had injuries of various kinds - casts, braces, crutches, slings, etc. It was hilarious!
I tried to find some more ideas online, and while this wouldn't be my choice because I'm not a big fan of these movies lol, I did find this, from the Twilight movies:
"In the movie, Bella breaks her leg, and goes to prom on crutches. For this costume you'll need crutches (of course), possibly a leg brace, and a dress. Bella wears a blue halter dress, a similar version can be found at Target. Over the dress, Bella wears a cream colored Bolero jacket and underneath the dress, a pair of grey leggings. With this costume, Bella once again wears sneakers."

what about a pirate? the brace could be her "peg leg"
put medial bandages on her with some blood or something and the brace will look like part of the outfit. :)
