hello mamas,
well, my daughter's bday party went well back in may...thank you for all your suggestions. now she's wanting to have a few friends over for a costume party on the 29th...we're gonna have it in the halfway finished basement (painted drywall, but still concrete floor...basically laundry and storage until we can finish it completely). really needing ideas on some inexpensive decor and of course fun, cheap and easy ways to entertain 15 yr old girls...we do have a lil tv area down there too so i figured they could have some scary movies if they want and/or could put a scary sounding CD on. she mentioned wanting to have a few gory things like eyeballs and maybe bobbing for something in some "blood" (fruit punch?)...i dunno...don't want this to be very messy for cleanup of course, but want it to be fun. wish me luck.

What can I do next?

been doing kids Halloween parties for years now! They're a BLAST!!

Current fav is to make "ghost balls". Take white (or light-colored) panty hose/knee hi's. Cut them into sections...about the length of your hand, tie off 1 end, & then fill the tube with flour. Tie off the closing end. These babies are fantastic for "ghost wars".....where the kids just throw them at each other as they're running around like maniacs. It is an absolute riot watching the kids! ***we also use these as "summer snowballs" for warm weather parties. ***we use them for kids parties AND adult parties!! & every time we use them, everybody wants more!!!!
Special note: this is VERY messy....we do it outside, at the very end of the party while waiting for parent pickup! & yes, the parents have joined in, too!

We go cheap on the whole party. I save my Halloween stash from year to year. All children's costumes are paired with adult masks, with glo-sticks in the eyes/nose/mouth! It's quite freaky. These creatures are placed inside & outside.
We also set up a Frankenstein on the pool table, complete with boxes set up as lab equipmt.
We put something scary in the bathtub/shower.
We leave the bedroom doors closed with glo-sticks on the thresholds. We close off the storage room & utility room in the basement (where the party is)....& glo-stick those doors, too.

We have quite a few party games which are requested every year. This includes truth or dare, with dare always being the choice!
We do Pictionary (homemade version....where I put the word on pieces of paper which are drawn from a skull. I always use Halloween or gross words.) & it's played boys vs. girls.
We play "Pass the Wienie"....boys vs. girls, of course. Raw hotdogs are held btwn the knees & passed thru the line.
We've had "R U Brave Enough to Taste This" contests. Some of the food items have been sardines, smoked oysters, feta cheese, frozen grapes - anything out of the ordinary. The kids are not told what it is....until the tasting is done. & they are given an option to guess the food item, with the most guesses winning the prize......a can of sardines.

I always set a smorgasboard for the kids. Each item is named something freaky.....& I always add really gross food....like the sardines, smoked oysters, etc. The smells alone are really effective!!

I know this sounds like a lot of $$ & work, but it's not. I am not a fan of big, expensive parties. I'm not a fan of elaborately-planned, oversized groups. We usually have <20 kids here, & we've never had to worry about fights/etc. Total cost usually runs <$50, that's food - prizes - & all!!! We do our own music, the kids enjoy doing SingStar/etc. The candy & sweets are sucked down, as is the cheese dip & chips! Oh, & you'll go thru twice the drinks you would normally expect.....teens drink a lot.

My older son is 23 & his friends still like to talk about those parties. My younger son is 14 & his friends are hounding us for details of the upcoming party....& making game requests, especially the "ghost balls". !!! I am happy!

You can go to a thrift store and find some inexpensive black sheets then get flourescent paint that reacts to black lights. You can docorate them and hang them as wall hangings. You can use white sheets to make ghosts. I found an inexpensive strobe liight, I think it was about $10 at Rite Aid and the kids had a blast with it. You can change the settings so it flickers slow, medium, or fast. They also sell flourescent colored "spider webs" or white ones that really glow in black light.
Decorating can be really inexpensive and easy.
One of my neighbors had punch in a big black put and used dry ice for the fog effect. It was really awesome.
I hope you get some great ideas about the eyeballs and things.

Halloween is such a fun time.

Our 15 yr old had a Halloween party last year in our back yard. We anticipated it being a bit chilly so we got one of those patio heaters.

I have a huge back yard and we had about 120 kids. We had a DJ to provide entertainment. I did regular foods with exception of some punch I make (per the request of these teens). The punch is only orange sherbet and ginger ale but they LOVE it.

The main thing we did was have a costume contest. I had slips of paper and a basket for everyone to vote and the winner got an ITunes gift card. THey had a dance off with the winner getting ITunes gift card and the last was a hula hoop contest with winner getting an ITunes gift card.

We have large parties...therefore, we always hire off duty police officers (2) to be around to make sure everything stays on the up and up. We've never "needed" the officers but it is well worth an extra $200 for that many teens.

Hope that helps!!

We had a lot of fun one year freezing koolaid in poly-vynel gloves (cleaner than latex) and putting those in the punch (after cutting away the glove of course) giving you some creepy floating hands. Black lights would also work well in a basement.

**update
Just saw another cute/cool idea. This one was on HGTV tonight, Carve out some large pumpkins (just top 'em wide and hollow them out), fill them with ice and use them to serve your drinks if you use can or bottle bevrages

I think all the ideas below are wonderful. I was thinking food. FamilyFun.com has wonderful halloween food ideas. They also have other ideas as would Martha Stewarts site. They would also have ideas for games. There are magazines out there with fall and halloween ideas galore and food can also be a decoration. You can have just a few props on a table covered with webbing and a few vials or lab looking things. Show old movies or fun halloween movies. Black lights and sheets were a good idea. Have a great time

anything red you are gonna put your face into will stain and be hard to wash off. wouldn't recommend that and always thought bobbing for apples was gross anyway and wouldn't play it growing up and I am not a germaphobiac but always felt it was gross to put my face into a bucket of water that other ppl had their face in and spit water back in. have seen a game where you hang apples from a string from the ceiling and the game was to eat the apple while it was hanging in the air with their hands behind their back and the one that ate the most in a few minutes won, then they changed the apples for the next group.

I did like the flour wars/idea someone else suggested. That would be a lot of fun outside.

you need to ask parents what type of movies they allow their kids to watch. most scary movies are rated R. also games related to evil as a ouija board, would stay away from that for sure. I have told my kids if that game ever shows up they need to call me to come get them or leave the party if they drove themselves. I was in 4th grade and someone had that game and I could feel the evil in the room coming from that game. It isn't something to play with.

Good luck and have fun.

bobbing for eyeballs (peeled grapes)?
reaching into brains (overcooked pasta) for a teenage geared prize?

I always had fun playing on a weegie board when I was fifteen and surrounded by other 15 year old girls.
