Hairdresser Cut Daughters Hair TOO Short.

Obviously I can't do anything about it but yesterday I took my 6yo daughter to get her hair TRIMMED. I told the lady "Cut about an inch and will you add a few layers in to pump up her natural curls?". The woman was fine with my instructions, so I thought! By looking at the front of my daughters hair in comparison w/the back I told the woman it looked a little uneven so the woman just kept cutting, and cutting, and cutting. I finally stopped her and that is when the hairdresser pulled another woman over to take a look which she then preceeded to "fix it". It was a sad, sad moment:( now my daughter has hair literally at her chin and it was sitting just below her shoulders. It's way too short for her face shape and now I don't know how to style it. Does anyone know of a good blog that shows cute syles for really short hair??

TIA!!

What can I do next?

Just find a thick stretchy headband. Without seeing her face structure I can't say whether she needs bangs or something on her forehead. If she does cut some bangs or pull them out of the headband. I have never seen anyone with curly hair that doesn't look good with their hair pulled back and then fluffed. Kind of looks like halo so she can be the angel she was meant to be.

You could have it done in a bob. Chin length is just about right for that.

I agree with the bob. Go even shorter in the back and make it a reverse bob. Remember, it will grow back, and at six I'm sure she is not so vain that she will care.

Cute hairbands with cute, realistic, colorful flowers. That's what we did when my middle daughter inflicted a haircut on her bangs trying to cut off a double cowlick.

I'm sure your daughter looks adorable. You can also see about finding some really cute soft knit hats. It's definitely in season, and there are plenty that would be functional but could also be worn indoors. I love the super-soft knits that are sort of floppy like the Parisian artiste hats.

Just Google 'short hair styles' for girls and a bunch of pictures will come up.

~I just did this. My (almost) 5 y/o daughter came home from preschool and informed me she wanted to get a hair cut 'really short'. So I Googled pics and let her choose her style. She went from having hair that reached the top of her butt to now hair that is just at chin level. I was so skeptical but it is SO darn cute on her though.

I know it is stressful and sucks when they make a mistake and don't give you the style you are after....but It is just hair. It will grow back, promise.

Short CURLY hair?

If you don't want to blow it out straight... (I blow my ringlets out straight every day when my hair is short, chinlength takes 5 minutes to blow out, and 10 minutes to flat iron... I EITHER flat iron straight, or in big loopy wavy curls. That's the awesome thing about a 3/4 inch flat iron. You can use it to go perfectly straight or controlled curls).

- try splitting her hair into 4-6 segments, about 1-2 inches back, and braid them. Like starting cornrows, but stopping after an inch or two. Lets the curls in back do their thing, while taming the beast up front. Similar to a headband, but also reduces the volume up front so she won't look like a Q-tip rubbed the wrong way, or like she stuck her finger in a socket.

- Similarly, instead of individual braids, a "frenchbraid headband" where you use those segments to do a sideways french braid

- Headbands

- Hairclips
* to pull bangs off to the side
* little ones -butterfly minis- to clip in pseudo braids/ pseudo cornrows

- Cornrows

It's hair--it will grow. I'm sure it looks adorable and will be even cuter with small bows or flower clips.

First thing I noticed - you said her curls. If she has curly hair were they cutting her hair wet with the curls pulled down? If so, the cut will never be right depending on the style of her curl. Most hair dressers that KNOW what they are doing cut it damp vs wet. They know that the weight of the water pulls the curls down and 1inch on curls when they are dry becomes 3-5 inches depending on the spiral. Sometimes all the curls need a trim then when the hair is partially dry a few curls need to be cut to add the desired results for the cut vs chunks/portions of hair.

Moral to my story find someone who KNOWS how to cut curly hair.

In my experience hair dressers that are Ethnic have a better understanding than most - but it is not a guarantee. Right now my hairdresser has fine, limp hair and she understands how to give my curls the right cut to style when it's straight and curly.

Please tell me that they didn't make you pay for the haircut! That's so sad!

I second the idea of looking on pinterest. I'm sure you can find great ideas! Also, you could look into cute headbands, flower clips, etc.

I know that hair is just hair and it grows back, but one time my *former* stylist cut a foot and a half of hair off my head! No kidding, it was almost to my waist and she cut it above my shoulders. She just thought it would look better. Gah!

I hope you find great ideas that make this sad event turn into an adventure! :)

You mentioned that her hair is naturally curly. If you straighten it with an electronic hair straightener it will add length. At 6 she can get away with not washing her hair at each bath time, which will save you some time with the straightener. Just be sure to use a heat protector spray.

Otherwise, I'd probably clip it back out of her eyes b/c that is really a length to fall in the face.

Your hairdresser was probably brand new or in training. So sorry to hear that. Next appointment with someone you don't know, ask how long they've been at it :)

I think your hairdresser was not trained in cutting curly hair. I have very curly hair, and they don't cut mine the same...the don't wet it down, pull it out, and snip the way they do people with straight hair because it of course will end up too short.

You were perhaps a tiny (TINY) bit to blame for telling her it looked uneven. It's hard to cut curly hair, and it's hard to tell if it's even or not until it drys because you AREN'T supposed to pull it out the way you do straight hair, etc. My mom is a hairdresser, for over 40 years, so I do have knowledge on both sides of this!

There isn't much you can do but let it grow back. I personally think chin length curly hair is adorable and wish my husband would let (let me rephrase...he prefers my hair long) me cut mine because I always thought it looked thickest and at it's best at that length.

Good luck...I'm sure she still looks beautiful!

I would first demand my money back.

I would also call around and ask friends for the name of a good ethnic hairdresser who knows how to deal with curly hair.

A bob is cute on little girls, and it works with straight or curly hair.
