I had really long hair, almost all the way down my back for my wedding (I had been growing it out for six years), and so I really wanted a change, and I went very short. It basically a pixie cut, trimmers used on the back, but then the top is fluffy enough to make it feminine. It's normally very cute, very easy to deal with, a combination of the typical short Mom haircut and the way Winona Ryder used to wear hers, back when it was edgy but still cute instead of crazy. ^_^
Anyway, I wasn't used to the haircut yet, but I loved it. I had a cold the day I went into the salon, so I wasn't wearing my contacts but instead my glasses. The stylist asked me what I wanted done. I told her, "I'm not really sure, just a trim up, I love the style, but I let it get way too long this time." Then I had to take my glasses off so she could cut it (I am legally blind without my glasses or contacts, so I couldn't see anything of my reflection in the mirror). It felt like it was taking a long time, but like I said, I wasn't really sure what I wanted from her or how long it should take yet. When she told me she was done, I put my glasses on, and nearly cried. SHE CUT MY HAIR UNTIL IT WAS ONLY AN INCH LONG, ALL THE WAY AROUND. It was a boy's haircut. She might as well have given me a buzz cut. I was in such a stunned state that I don't remember saying anything, I don't remember paying or tipping, I just drove home, lay down in bed and cried.
Particularly terrible was that I had gone in to get my hair cut because my husband had a very fancy dinner party coming up, and I wanted to look my best. It took a lot of courage for me to suck it up and walk in there. I felt completely naked the whole time.
That was about 5 or 6 years ago now. I didn't allow any pictures to be taken until my hair had grown out, so I have no idea if it was actually as bad as I thought it was in my head, but I have never again worn my glasses to a hair appointment. ^_^
