Haircut for My 16-Month-old Son--won't Let Mom Do It!

So, my toddler son is in desperate need of haircut--if we are to look like we care about his looks at all!! My mother and I successfully trimmed off one little curl over each of his ears when he was about one, but that's all he'd let us get away with. My husband would like to take him somewhere for his first haircut (man-to-man excursion, ha!!) We live in Arlington. Where can they go? Or do you have any tips for doing it ourselves without having to use anesthesia?! :) TIA!!

What can I do next?

Try taking him along with dad and let him watch dad getting his hair cut - a lot of times little ones will see that 'grownups' do it, so they will too!

Kazaam's on Arkansas and Cooper does a great job on both my little one's hair. They are reasonable and very good with the kids. Cuts always turnout even and cute.

Kazams (sp?) Kuts for Kids is great. It's right off of Cooper on either Pioneer or Arkansas. If you do it at home you can put on his favorite show and keep him distracted with something good to eat. I use Starbursts because they last a while, but they would be a choking hazard at 14 months. As a last resort, you can try cutting it while he is asleep. That is how I had to cut my son's hair until he was 4 1/2. It is definitely not ideal, but it did work.

Cool Cuts for Kids is a great place for first hair cuts. They take a picture of your child and they put a "first haircut" hair clipping in a paper frame for you. The girls there are really good with kids and my grand daughter who is now 5 loves when I take her there. There are cute chairs that they can sit in (like a fire engine) and they can play video games or watch a dvd while they get their haircut. It's located in front of the Parks Mall.

Depending on how long or thick it is, why not let it grow a little more? My 21 month old son has these great blond curls that I'm just not ready/willing to give up. Everyone tells me how much they love his hair. It is getting long- when wet it's almost to his shoulders. I keep saying when people tell me what a cute little girl he is, I'll cut his hair. BTW- I have a friend who is Jewish and she said in the Jewish tradition boys don't have their first haircut until they are age 3. When I was recently in NYC visiting my friend I saw lots of long-haired little boys and they were just ADORABLE!!!

I have always found that taking my children somewhere else is SO much better. We used Cool Cuts when the kids were younger - there were more distractions to keep them from throwing a complete fit and the stylists were used to dealing with unhappy children while cutting hair. I think if you can remove yourself from teh situation, the stress and anxiety levels for both you and the kids diminish greatly! Go to Cool Cuts or somewhere else adn take lots of pictures instead of fighting that battle with your little one. Good luck!

Go to Cool Cuts 4 Kids in Arlington. Here's the info: Arlington
4211 South Cooper, #133
Arlington, 76015
Phone: ###-###-####

You can walk in all the time but if you go in the morning or make an appt, they will have more time and perhaps it will be less crowded.

It's a great place for haircuts because it's all kid-oriented. For toddlers, they have eith a taxi cab or a firetruck to sit in and can watch a video of your choice. They will also take a picture afterwards and give you the first lock of hair they cut off as a keepsake. The con is that they are not real cheap but for the atmosphere it's worth the price. The ladies who cut are very good with them too.

I took my son there for his first haircut and he did not like it but I help his hand the whole time. He cried pretty much the whole time and I was somewhat sad to see his hair go but it's an experience I will never forget.

Let us know where you end up going.

p.s. I still take my son there for haircuts because they have a Thomas the Train table and now he plays video games during his haircut.

I've cut my son's hair since he was a baby, and I think the best place to do it, when they are young, is the bath tub.

**Now, I DO NOT recommend using any electrical items in/near the tub. **

I used scissors when he was younger, but I have recently started using clippers, which I use away from the tub but close to the (empty- no water) sink for easy clean up. (I also use a drain strainer so the hair doesn't clog my pipes.)

You may also want to try in front of the t.v., while he's watching a show. (Don't use the Wiggles or any other "moving"-type of show. LOL) Just be sure to place a towel under or something to catch the hair, if you have carpet.

Best wishes!

I managed the Sportclips in Arlington for awhile, and if your husband is looking for a man to son experince it is definitely masculine. There's sports on all the TV's at the stations, and they have some great stylists. I would call ahead to find out if Jennifer O. or Noelle are working, they're both great with kids, especially Jennifer.

I have always used Cool Cuts for my son. It will cost about $20, but well worth it. They have many distractions and the employees are really good with kids. If you husband wants to take him on the weekend, I would suggest to make an appointment or go when they first open. Otherwise you might be waiting a while.
