Hair Won't Hold Color Anymore - Am I Alone? What to Do?

Ever since my first pregnancy (over 4 years ago), my hair will no longer hold color. I tried doing at-home color, which wound up darker rather than lighter (both semi-permanent and permanent). I tried doing professional, which was like flushing $$$ down the toilet, couldn't see any difference at all.

I asked the pros, who have no idea, so I thought I'd ask the people who really know - the mamas. Is this normal? Is there anything I can do about it? I know it's vain, but I would sure love some highlights to perk me up.

EDITED
Sorry - I guess the more accurate description would be that color won't TAKE, not hold. I do have hair that bleaches easily in the sun, to answer your question. And highlights (lighter) from a professional stylist also did not take. :( I will look into the color filler, thanks!

What can I do next?

Try a neutral color filler before applying the hair color. That's what some stylist use. You can get it at Sally's.

I would ask, before you started dying your hair did you have the kind of hair that bleaches out easily in the sun? I naturally have darkish reddish brown hair which would end up blond by the end of the summer. Even when I dye it doesn't last as long as on normal people.

I would suggest staying away from home hair coloring, leave it to the professionals for sure. If you just want highlights that's just bleach and should definitely stay no problem. Have you tried just highlights? Color does wash out or fade out but bleach does not, it grows out.

Good luck

I agree with Momma L. We moved about 7 months ago and we now have hard water-my color will never hold anymore! I was actually going to ask this same question because my color was fading a whole lot faster than usual. I totaly blame the hard water! (It sure does a number on our countertops as well!)

I turned grey at 18. Yes 18 and have used Nice and Easy ever since.
The product had improved a bit through the years it works fine and
I can't stand the idea of having white hair.
The price varies, but it is a once every three weeks for under $10.
They have a phone line to give advise.

It also has to do with what are you using for shampoo and conditioner. Many will strip the color.

If you would like to try a natural based, no sodium laurel sulfates, no dyes, and it works, let me know. I offer a first time discount for people to try Sensaria Natural Bodycare's products and there is a one-year guarantee. Message me for 20% off:o)

I'm a stylist. Often, hormone imbalances, medications and water supply (like if you have hard water or lots of minerals in your shower water) can effect the longevity of color.

As for getting highlights, that removes color molecules from your hair. It shouldn't effect color longevity unless they are toning=depositing color on top of it, or they are using a low ammonia non-bleach for hi-lights.
