I am losing hair like crazy after the birth of my son in May. I just noticed it about 1 month ago and had heard this happens to some women, but it never happened after the birth of my daughter. Is it a boy thing?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to all the responses! I'm so glad to read this is normal for a lot of women. I went to the doctor and tested my thyroid - all is fine. She said to give it some time and not to worry that I wouldn't go bald! I just kept doubting myself since it didn't happen with my daughter. My hairdresser said to take the vitamin Biotin and suggested a good leave-in conditioner to use and that I would have my old locks back in shape in a few months. I've started both, so we'll see! Thanks again to all!

It happened to me after my daughter. It was mostly in the front, and it grew back after MONTHS, it just took a long time (my hair grows slowly anyway) and I had to endure the sticking up (shorter) hairs all over the place for a while. It was unbelievable the amounts of hair I'd have in my brush / shower! And to touch my already fine hair, especially just around my face / hairline; it was kind of disheartening and frustrating, but its just hair and it grows back. Its a shock, I know! Especially since it didn't happen with your first child, but its not a "boy thing", I'm certain! Anyway, scarves and head wraps are cute and very much in style, lucky for you, if you like them! A lot of us go through it, and at least its not as permanent as stretch marks or melasma or any other number of lovely things that come along with pregnancy. I have heard it is due to the drastic change in hormones. I have heard it is just normal hair shedding that has returned after not shedding while pregnant. Either way, it comes back. Hope this helps!

I have noticed that I was losing a lot of hair too after the birth of my dauther. It didn't happen with my son so I don't think it's a gender thing. However, mine has been like this for a while. My dauther was born in May of last year so were talking over a year. I am hoping that has something to do with it. I don't see any bald spots but lots of hair comes out especially when I brush. I will go see a doctor if it continues but I heard it can last up to this long after having a baby. I guess time will tell. Yours is probably related since it's just been a few months.

I did exactly the same thing about 3 months after my son was born. He's my first so I assumed that's what happened. My friend that had a little girl did the same. I was losing tons. There was more of my hair on the floor than the dog!!!!! It was disgusting, but it eventually subsided. Happy vacuuming!!

I only have one child, a girl, and I lost a ton of hair after the birth of my daughter and continued to lose it for a few months. As far as I know, it is completely normal and I promise you will still have lots of hair left.

I lost my hair around the edges after the birth of my son too. My hair dresser suggested I continue taking vitamins. One year later it has grown back but it took months.

No, it's normal. We normally shed hair every day. When we are pregnant, we don't shed at all or as much (which is why we have such great hair during pregnancy). About 3 months after we have the baby, we begin to shed hair again, but we have ALOT now to shed! I was nervous about the amount of hair I was losing, so I did some investigating on this. We aren't losing more hair than we would normally lose, so don't worry. I've slowed down a lot and my daughter is 8 months. You may not have noticed it as much with your girl, I don't know, but I'm sure you must have shed some!

Nope because I had two girls and it happened to me. Right now actually it is happening because my daughter was born in April. Its your hormones going back to normal. It passes.

It is normal. After the birth of my son I too lost hair for about 3 months. Don't worry because while you are pregnant your hair grows constantly due to the extra horomones and vitamins.

I don't know if it's a boy thing but after I had my daughter, my hair did fall out. But after I had my twin boys, it came out in clumps and for almost a year. I've heard it has something to do with the hormone levels and I guess mine were wacked having twins. But it got so bad that we had to have a plummer come and unclog our bathtub. Oh, the things us women go through for our children!! =)

Don't worry, I had the exact same thing happen to me, no hair loss after my daughter, and then after my son, major hair loss. Of course I have very fine hair to begin with, so I was scared of being bald when it was all said and done. I went to the Dr and he told me that it has to do with our hormones getting back to normal. The baby is in there for nine months for most people and it can take up to nine months for your body to get back to normal. Good Luck and don't freak out too bad.

If you had an epidural they say it's a side effect of that. I had the same thing after 2 births and it did go away after about 1 year! Good luck

P., I lost lots of hair after the birth of my second child. It can be a normal response to the hormal changes after giving birth.
I did go to the doctor who did a blood test and found that my thyroid level was low. I was put on synthroid and the hair loss stopped.

I started losing lots of hair about six months after my daughter was born. After about 4 months, it slowly got better. My hair was thin for a couple months but filled back in eventually!

HI - I have had 4 children (1 boy and 3 girls). I had this happen with all 4. I think it has to do with the Thyroid. After having a baby, your Thyroid will do funny things which will cause hair loss. It will be over active and then under active and usually returns back to normal. I think it takes about 4-6 months for it to get back to normal functioning.

This happened to me also, it may be a normal thing but for me it was because of my thyroid. There were other symptoms also, such as never having enough energy, and other things that seemed normal with pregnacy. They checked my blood and found that I had hypothyroidism. When they put me on medication for it you wouldn't believe the difference. You might not have this but you should definatly get it checked.
