Hair Loss After Having Twins

Hello all I have a question has anyone experienced losing hair after having their kids? I just had my first period after having twins and my hair started to fall out about a week before my period and is still coming out. Now when I say falling out I don't mean big clumps but when I run my hands through my hair there are quite a few strands. Also when I take a shower there is hair in the drain more so than usual. And it is not letting up. I mean I use a pic with my hair when out of the shower and there is a lot of hair in it then later when my hair dries I will pull any lose strands out and there is a lot. Just wondering when this stops and if anyone else has experienced it. Are there any shampoos I should try that are more gentle perhaps?

What can I do next?

Hi L.,
Yes this is normal. It happened to me after both of my pregnancies. Don't worry about it. There is not much you can do. My hair started to grow back in after a few months of falling out.
Good luck.

This is completely normal. My daughter is 7 months old now and I have new hair growth coming in where I lost hair around 3 1/2 months after having her. I actually made an appointment to see a doctor about it because I was losing so much hair, but then I canceled the appointment when I read on babycenter.com that this was normal. Don't worry, you will stop shedding eventually!

Hello, after having my baby, who is now 15 months old, my long hair started to fall out. One suggestion my hairdresser told me was to keep taking my pre natal vitamins to strengthen my hair. And when that didnt work.I just decided to cut all the dead hair off and start over. If your not looking to cut your hair then I would try to go to a specialist to see what can be used.

Hi L.,
As far as I know, it's a normal course for your hair to leave you - sometimes a mass exodus. My started at about 3 months after I had my daughter and continued for at least 3 months. I got tired of cleaning out the drain and had a lot of it cut off. The new hair started growing in and met up with the existing. Best thing I can advise is to continue taking your prenatals if you still have any. If not, there are vitamins that help with hair - B's I think, but you can look that up on the net. Be patient - it just takes time to get back to normal.

it's a total hormonal thing. if you are losing a lot i would call your dr so they can run some quick blood work. in the meantime be sure to get adaquate nutrition and take you prenatal vitamins still.

Hi! My twins are 3 and I'm still experiencing more than normal hair loss. Hair loss after any preg is normal b/c after baby, you start losing all the hair that you normally would've during each preg month (for some reason we don't lose the hair we normally would if not preg.) I got this info from my hair stylist, and so she reassured me that the extra clumps are normal b/c of the extra hormones from having twins. My hair is naturally thick and wavy so I can spare the loss, but if you're concerned, go ahead and seek prof advice. But give it time since your twins are young.

Hello, to everyone. I have been doing some research on my condition, that first started off with alopecia,(hair loss) 6-7 months after giving birth to my twin daughters 13 yrs ago. Upper temple area that I noticed was sore, such as one person put it, like having your hair pulled real tight in a ponytail all day. Then came the itching, and eventually a round area greater than 3cm of baldness. Everyone, myself, and including my primary doctor thought it was from being "ran down," from breast feeding and not enough sleep. I also had dropped a lot of weight. I started off 135lbs prior to conceiving my girls. At 37 weeks I was 155lb. When my hair had fell out I was down to 113lbs as well. Throughout the 13 yrs since giving birth I have had a lot of mild infections. Such as bronchitis, ingrown hair follicles under my arms. To make a long story short, I am now being referred to see an endocrinologist from my primary doctor thinking I have Addison's disease. As I have researched I along with my primary doctor thinks it started off as Sheehan's syndrome, which women can get shortly after giving birth, and especially after having multiples. Not to scare anyone, but Addison's can take up to years before being diagnosed.

When you are pregnant, elevated hormone levels keep your hair from falling out at the same rate it normally does. That's why pregnant women often have lustrous, thicker hair while pregnant.

Usually about 3 months later, it is normal to start losing all that extra hair you were saving. It is normal to lose up to 100 hairs a day normally, and even more in the motnhs after having a baby. The hair shedding should let up soon and go back to your normal rate of hair loss.

After I had my first baby, the hair loss was so annoying I cut of 6 inches of hair because I was tired of pulling the logn stands off everything. Good luck!

The insane things that can happen to women!! This happened to me after the birth of my 5th child. It had never happened before and it did not happen with #6. Go figure. Anyway, don't panic. I seriously did. I went to Dr. had blood work the best he came up with was that it was because of the stress of having a child. When it had never happened before. I also had an itchy scalp. I used Paul Mitchell shampoo with tea tree oil. I also used tea tree oil. It is expensive, but very concentrated, you could put it in your shampoo. I tried the generic brand from Sally's, with tea tree oil, not the same. I stopped losing my hair shortly after starting the shampoo. Hope this helps.

Hi,
my name is Kristen and I have 3 yr old twins, 23 month old and another due in August. Yes it is normal for your hair to fall out after giving birth. With the twins, b/c you have so many hormones your hair probably got pretty thick and now it is just getting rid of that hair as you lose those hormones. I didn't lose nearly as much hair w/ my singleton. So don't worry, it will end soon!

Hi L., I just had twin girls 4 months ago. I am having this same thing happen. I did dye my hair a few times but man am I losing a lot of hair. I brush it and a bunch of strands come out. Then when I shampoo and scrub vigourously it comes out too. It sure is a challenge having twins isn't it? I have a 3 year old son and a 4 year old daughter as well. It is crazy having that many kids. I also think it has to do with diet too. I know ever since my girls were born I am lucky to get 3 well balanced meals a day. Usually I just grab a snack or two. who has time to eat ha ha. Well I don't know what we can do for hair loss but hopefully it goes away. If you ever want to talk you can e-mail me at ____@____.com. I'd love to chat with other mommies of twins that are near my daughters ages. Its lonely when people don't understand what you are going through after you have twins.

This is pretty normal. Mine did this after both of my pregnancies. I don't think changing shampoos will help - it will get better over time though. I'm pretty sure it's one of the hormonal side effects.

You won't go bald!! This is very normal and just a part of the hormonal changes in your body. Soon, you'll start to notice little sprouts of hair that stick straight up on your head and you'll probably think that your hair is breaking off. It's not. I asked my hairdresser and she said all the little sprouts were exactly that....new hair coming in....just like a baby. Two years later, my hair still seems to come out much more than it ever did, but overall it is unnoticeable. Relax, once your hormones get back to somewhat normal, it'll stop coming out so much. :)

This is totally normal. You are shedding all the hair that wasn't shedding when you were pregnant. It will stop within a few months.

It happened to me following both pregnancies, not immediately after birth, but a few months following. I don't believe it has anything to do with your period returning, as mine didn't return until my first was 10 months old and my second was 9 months old.

I too have twin girls...they are 4 1/2 months old and my hair is falling out A LOT too. I had the same problem during my pregnancy and my OB said it was normal. He also told me that it would fall out afterward too. I truly believe I should be bald! While I do not have any helpful advice for you, I wish you luck with your twins!! If you're in the Grove City area, we should get our girls together sometime!!

Hello L.,

I lost my hair after having my son a few years ago and was told by both my family doctor and OBGYN doctor that this is normal. That during the pregnancy that hair stays in a cyle of growing hair and that after the pregnancy that hair goes into a cycle of losing the hair. I was practically bald on the sides of my head and this lasted for about 2-3 months. Then the hair started to grow back... slowly but surely. I have friends who have also lost their hair and their wasn't anything we could to about it since it's a cyle the hair does. Know you're not alone.

Yes, and every mother I know has experienced hair loss. Though I thought it would happen right after delivery. It didn't happen for several months and it lasted probably two months. I don't know of anything you can do. It happens because you loose less hair when you are pregnant. So it's kind of making up for lost time. Don't worry, it will stop.

I had the same thing happen after having my kids. I think its normal and I think you don't lose as much hair when you are pregnant because of all of the hormones. It will stop after a while and you won't go bald. It you are concerned ask your doctor about it.
