How can I keep from losing so much hair? I lose hair in the shower, brushing my hair, running my fingers through and it gets everywhere. I know it is normal, but I want to know if there are any preventatives to not losing so much. A little I can deal with, but too mush is a little too much, lol ;) Can anyone help me?

What can I do next?

For me this lasted until my son was six months old; hang in there. My beautician told me there was really nothing you can do and you just have to wait it out. I would put my hair up a lot to keep it confined and out of my way which helped. My husband and I were very frustrated with hair everywhere, but it all passes thank goodness!

The same thing happened to me about 5 or 6 months after I had my son. I have a question for you because you didn't mention it in your request. Are you taking the pill now so you don't get pregnant? I started taking the pill after I had my son and experienced hair loss like you. A lot fell out!! I call it my hair metamorphosis. After it stopped falling out it started to grow back in brown(I'm blonde!!)...and it was super curly!! I looked like Shirley Temple!!! About 6 or 7 months later the curly, brown hair fell out and I had my straight, blonde hair back. The whole thing was scary, so I know how you feel. I hope everything turns out for you and what happened to me doesn't happen to you too. The only other thing I can say is if you're not on the pill it may be due to stress or a poor diet. Our bodies go through a lot of hormonal changes during pregnancy.

Hi C.,

You're going through a post pregnancy stage right now. Remember when you were pregnant and youi didn't lose any hair? Your hair looked full and beautiful and shiny. Well, bye-bye do. Right now you're body is shedding anything related to pregnancy, including your hair. I lost hair in globs it seemed for a few months. Sorry to say, you're just going to have to deal with it. Even prenatal vitamins won't help. Wish I had better news for you, but take heart that every woman goes through this. Good Luck with your new baby!

When you are pregnant you don't lose hair, so after you have a baby you will lose TONS of hair for about 4-6 months. It is just a fact of pregnancy. The good news is it all grows back the way it was before you were pregnant. Although my hair went from curly to straight.

I also have a baby the same age as yours, except a girl, and I am going through the same thing with my hair. I feel like I've never lost so much hair in my life! I know that during pregnancy, we don't lose as much hair, so after the baby comes, all that hair that hasn't come out, falls out. I found this website that talks more about pregnancy before/after and hair loss. http://www.americanpregnancy.org/pregnancyhealth/hairloss... Hope that helps!

i had the same problem after i had my daughter. she is now 15 months and it hasnt stopped. My hairdresser said that it was from being pregnant and now your body is getting used rid of all the extra vitamins it had from being pregnant. So your hair will probably break too. Mine did. But I asked if there was anything that you could do, and she said nope, besides lessen the strees in your life.....yeah right, how am i supposed to do that......

I had really nice hair before and during pregnancy, but about 3 months after my daughter was born, my hair started falling out like crazy! It drove me nuts! It took me a long time to get it close to where it was before, and I don't think it will ever be as healthy as it once was.

Hi,
Your lossing your hairs so much because you just had a baby. Don't worry it will stop and go back to normal in a couple for months or so. Keep taking your prenatal Vit. It's normal. I have had three kids and with each one I lost my hair. It seemd to get worse with each child, but it comes back. Even though it's alot coming out no one really notices it as much as you. Hope I helped. Congrats on the baby boy...:)

Yep, pregnancy does many things to us, both good and bad! But you might also want to ask your doctor about it, including a thyroid test. After my second child, I became hypothryroid (underactive thyroid) and my hair loss was one of the first noticeable symptoms. Good luck!

It is very normal to be losing a ton of hair after having a baby. It's just your hormones in flux, it usually goes back to normal after a while.

I use a product called Nioxin. They're hair products designed for thinning hair and hair loss. They're a bit expensive, but I've found that I notice a difference.

I starting losing a lot of hair after my third child was born. He is 4 1/2 now and I'm still losing lots of hair. My hair is now pretty thin and nothing seems to help. No one can find anything wrong and nothing seems to help. I'm not going bald by any means but you'd better believe my hair is EVERYWHERE!! It is somewhat normal after pregnancy to lose some hair for a while. Good luck!

As everyone else has said, this is SO normal!! My husband complained that it was getting to be a bit disgusting-- he started to feel like he was living in a zoo!! It all seems to even out in the end. I think my hair stopped falling out like crazy at about 6-9 months postpartum.
Best of luck!

I had the same thing - I could not believe how much hair I was losing. It started about 3-4 months post partum and lasted about 2 or 3 months. My baby is 9 months now and I actually lose less hair now than before I got pregnant. If you have long hair, I would recommend cutting it a little shorter (maybe a cute bob) - I did, and my hair didn't seem so stringy and thin. Plus now I have a lot of 2 inch long hairs all over my head, so I'm waiting for them to grow out! It's just a waiting game... good luck!

I also had a bunch of hair loss but with my 3rd child it seemed to be on the extreme side. When I went in for a physical the doctor told me that I could lose hair up to a year after childbirth but scheduled a thyroid test saying that it would probably come back normal. Turns out it didn't. I ended up having a hypo thyroid. Now that I am on medication my thyroid is regulated and my hair loss has significantly reduced. If you have other symptoms of an under/over active thyroid I would speak to your doctor. It's a simple blood test that takes a few minutes but can save your sanity and hair!

I had the same thing and I found that if I wore my hair up in a pony tail holder I lost more hair versus if I left it down. I would try leaving it done for a while. When you put it up some of your hair breaks.

I experienced the same thing about 3-4 months after my son was born. I began losing a bunch of hair and I'd clean my brush out once a day. It's just your hormones regulating. It could keep happening for the next few months (or the next year even). Eventually, it will slow down to normal hair loss.

it's just your horomones going back to normal, nothing to worry about. Try using Nioxin, I used that and it slowed hair loss for me (I was to the point of a handful during washing and another during brushing, then more during the day) I had nice thick hair before the birth of my daughter, and now it is not so thick anymore, but the nioxin really helped!!

I should add you can buy it at most salons)

It's very normal for you to have hair changes with all those hormones during your pregnancy and months after delivery.

When I was pregnant my natural blonde hair started coming in black and got super duper thick. Then after my dd was born it started to thin back out again and thank god it came back in blonde. Totally weird.

Hi C.

Are you breastfeeding? I lost A LOT of hair w/ my first child while breastfeeding b/c I wasn't getting enough nutrition. STAY on the prenatals or a GOOD multivitamin. I take vitamins like water w/ my second child and haven't lost any hair this time and I've been breastfeeding for 7 months. Maybe it was hormones w/ my first, but I think it was probably lack of good nutrition. Breastfeeding can take a lot out of you. Try upping your vitamins for a couple weeks and see if that changes anything:)

Good luck and don't worry, at least it will grow back;)

I have really long hair so even though I'm really not losing that much hair it seems like more because its very long. Maybe this is part of your problem. Also when you are prego your body holds onto more of your hair then sometime after you have the baby it loses what you should have plus its usual daily amount. About three months after I had my son I started losing the hair right above my temples and looked like I had a receding hairline it grew back in about 6 months. There isn't much you can do about it short of gluing it back in.

That is perfectly normal after having a baby. Your head hung on to every little hair it had and then grew more quickly then ever during pregnancy. After the shift in hormones your body is now letting go of that hair. It will fall out A LOT for a while. But you won't go bald or anything. It's just the normal process of a no longer pregnant woman's body. Some get it worse then others. It's like stretch marks. You never know how it will turn out until you are staring it in the mirror. LOL Good luck!
