Hair Loss - Aubrey,TX

I am 13 months out from having my son and I am still losing hair. I had a complete panel of blood work done back in April and everything came back normal except the fact that my calcium was slightly elevated. Thyroid and everything else came back normal. So my PCP retested my calcium and also checked on the parathyroid in early May, and those results came back normal. So, I am still at a loss as to what could be causing the hair loss. Does anyone have any ideas/suggestions? My PCP did state that it could be caused by stress...I am home with a 1 year old and a 2 year old...so that could very well be the case. But I don't feel "overwhelmed" with stress. So I'm not even sure it's from stress. I take prenatal vitamins and other supplements daily. I eat a well-balanced diet. I am active with the kids. I try to get plenty of sleep. I am throwing around the idea of getting in to see an Endocrinologist...but I almost feel foolish thinking about it, as the PCP results came back "normal". Does anyone have any experience with this? Have you ever gone to see a specialist and they were able to provide anything more on your condition...even after your normal doctor's results came back fine? Thanks in advance for any replies.

I would bet that you are low progesterone. Post pardum hair loss is very common because of the vitamin issues but also because you do not cycle normally for so long that your body is not producing progesterone.

I have 4 friends (and my own mother) that have started progesterone cream, bio-identical hormone not the progestins in birth control, and have regrown their hair with NO SIDE EFFECTS. As a cancer survivor, I can't urge you enough to avoid nioxin if you can. It is a toxin - not enough space on this forum to get into all that.

Even if you are having 'normal' cycles, you may be estrogen dominant from one of the follow causes: annovulatory cycles (normal cycle does not necessarily mean that you ovulate - only way to know is by checking basal temp), interference from toxins through milk/meat/veggies, hormones from milk/meat, taking certain prescription drugs, stress, being overweight holds extra estrogen around middle, taking hormones (the pill, IUD, HRT even low dose).

Very easy to use, relatively inexpensive.
Write me back if you want to discuss (obviously, I am obsessed with the research and think this is the best thing that anyone can do for their health!)

I would defintely recommend seeing a dermatologist....one that is specialized in hair loss. I have hair loss issues as well and after years of frustrating tests and doctors, I finally got someone to listen to me. There are very different types of hair loss. I have androgenic alopecia which is basically female pattern hair loss. Although the diagnosis sucks because there is little that can be done, I was very happy to finally know! A knowledgeable doctor can take a biopsy of your scalp and tell you what type of hair loss you have. If it is diffuse loss all over, your prognosis is better....if it is like mine and diffuse all over but the obvious thinning is on the top and near the front of your hair line, its not so great! I see Dr. Angela Bowers in Southlake and Dr. Whiting in Dallas at Baylor. Dr. Whiting has zero bedside manner but he is one of the leading doctors in the country on hair loss in women! He does not take insurance and it is about $1000 to have him do a biospy and bloodwork and exam, but you would get a clear diagnosis if something is seriously wrong with your hair. Or you could see a dermatologist that is on your insurance for the labs and biopsy and then decide if it is worth your time to see Dr. Whiting. Nioxin and other shampoos like that will not help with most types of hair loss, nor will vitamins etc. Check out the website www.heralopecia.com for message boards and great info about all types of hair loss! Good luck! I am all about being proactive in treating hair loss and I have done everything recomended treatment, but I am also ok with the fact that someday I will be seeking out cosmetic measures to deal with my hair.

I don't have a problem with hair loss but a friend uses a product from Ulta (Nioxin) or something like that and she swears by it.

Also, the vitamin Biotin is great for hair and nails.

Lastly, I don't see anything wrong with being tested again. I see my OBGYN, Endocrinologist and Gasteroentologist. ALL 3 like to use a different lab to see if results come back different. I went through a LOT of testing last year and this is one thing they had me do....always alternating or going to a different lab.

You never know! I know 1 lab froze my sample and then tested it and froze it when it was supposed to be tested and frozen then tested. Simple mistakes in the lab can lead to different diagnosis.

Good luck

I have been almost 2 years out from having my daugther and my hair is still falling out!! I went to see a dermatologist a few weeks ago (b/c my labs were normal to when I saw my pcp, he suggested seeing a dermatologist) and he gave me some foamy stuff (not sure what it is but he said it might help grow my hair back) I go back in two weeks.

I agree with the Nioxin, I used to use it and it helps stimulate blood flow, but ask someone at the store or see if you can look up which number to use because they have different levels of it.

Also if you take too many vitamins that can also cause your hair to fall out exceedingly. I'm taking these nutrilife womans vitamins, and so far I like it. my nails are strong and my hair isnt falling out too much.
