I am loosing my hair and don't know what to do. I have always lost a little bit of hair but lately it is coming out by the hand full. Everywhere you look in my house is piles of my hair. I clean out my brush daily and it is always full. I haven't changes shampoos or anything so I don't know what is going on. My hair is already starting to feel thinner and I am afraid that it will start to be real noticeable real soon. What could be causing this?

What can I do next?

Hello A., I had the same problem. Did you just have a baby? sometimes with having a baby makes for hair loss. I talked with my hair stylist she had me use a shampoo to help with it and it started to grow back.

A. in my experience my hair has fallen out for two different reasons. The first one was that I developed a thyroid problem. When something is wrong with your thyroid it can make your body do some really wierd things, like lose or gain weight, decrease or increase in appetite, you may feel extremely tired, and in my case I started to lose my hair! The other possibility could simply be stress! When I have gotten extremely stressed out for a long period of time, I have experienced the same, loss or gaining weight, decrease or increase in appetite and also loss of hair...
I would suggest a visit do your family docotor. They may want to run some blood tests.
Another thought is that it may be something your body is doing to get itself back on track from having your little boy 6 months ago. It's really hard to say, only you know your body...
Hope this helps.

I think all women lose hair after they have babies! I lost so much hair that I had bald spots! I have had to put layers in my hair a couple of months ago to even out my new growth! And this is two years after I had my son!

The wonderful joys we go through to have these little angles!!!

You still might want to get your thyroid checked out!! Check around with family to see if there is a history.

Hi A.,

Have you been under a lot of stress lately? I suffer from dpression and when I have a lot of stress my hair will come out by the handfuls. Do you take vitamens? I have been taking Omega 3 and my hair has stopped falling out.

I hope I've been helpful and you figure out what is causing you hair loss.

Sincerely,

L. Titus

I would guess that you are simply having the traditional after baby hair loss - did you have it with your first? I think I started mine around 4-6 months, and it does seem like you are going bald - it soon stops, don't worry. It's mainly due to the hormones returning back to the normal levels, or so I'm told.

No worries:) It's temporary. Your body is still dealing with postpartum issues. During pregnancy your hair loss decreases, then in the period of time after pregnancy, your body adjusts and you start to loose the extra hair. It's due to hormones. For me it was worse after my first pregnancy. Just like you my hair was coming out in handfuls in the shower, in the living room, everywhere. I probably noticed it more because my hair was very long. I ended up getting my hair cut very short so I would not notice as much:0 Hang in there. Things get back to normal.

Kris,

Call your doctor, make an appointment, and have your thyroid checked. Hair loss like yours is one of the symptoms. there may be another medical issue that is causing this also, so it's important to have the doc check you.

If you are breastfeeding, this could be why. I breastfed my 15 month old until she was a year old. I have a hard time remembering to take my vitamins, so would take them if I was lucky once a month. But my hair started doing the same thing. I even had a receding hair line, I was freaking out, but as soon as I started taking my vitamins it came back but very slowly. Now that I stopped breastfeeding, it has come all the way back.

Get your thyroid checked. I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and that is one of the symptoms.

Hi A., This is just a suggestion, but have you ever had you thyroid checked? I have hypothyroidism, and one of the side effects, if not monitored, is hair loss. Also other symtoms are low metabolism, irratibility, depression, etc. If you have any other symtoms you should get your thyroid checked, it is a simple blood test. You can google "thyroid disease" and read a much larger list of symptoms. FYI - there are nearly 70% of Americans with some type of thyroid disease and many of them are unaware of it. The treatment is a simple hormone replacement pill you have to take daily, but you feel so much better with more energy, etc. Also just to mention, this is extremely common after a pregnancy/child birth. That is when my hypothyroidism set in, and I was 28 when I had my son.

I agree with the post pardom answers. I lost a TON of hair after I weaned my kids. It was hormones for me. But sometimes people lose it from stress too. If you are really worried, it wouldn't hurt to go to the doctor, but for me it was perfectly normal and it only lasted a couple months. I never got the receding hairline or bald patches which might be cause for some worry.

Pregnancy hormones keep you from losing hair during pregnancy, so you shed less hair. Now that you are not pregnant those hormones have shifted and all the "extra" hair is shedding. So, you notice more than normal hair loss. If you breastfeed your hair loss may be exacerbated. I have read that it could take up to a year for hormones to level off and hair to return back to normal. Keep in mind that new hair is growing back - so you may see several short hairs if you check your hair line.

It might be becuase you just had a baby. After I had my daughter my hair was really falling out and my doctor said that it was because of the change in hormones and that it was regulate itself and my hair would be fine. I would talk to your OBGYN to confirm that is what is going on. But that is my guess.

I would advise you go to the doctor. It could be harmless, or it could be any number of other things that are treatable. It could be alopecia, especially if you notice your eyelashes and eyebrows also looking thinner.

Good luck!

A.,

I too am losing my hair and also have a 5 month old daughter.

I have always had some type of hair loss after having my kids but mostly with after I had my daugthers. I think it is due to the fact that I breast feed my daughter and did breast feed my second child too.
I could make dolls every day with all the hair I lose.
I don't have any advice for you but to talk to your doctor, they say you lose some hair after having a baby, but the way mine is coming out is ridiculous. I think it is the lack of vitamins.

Good luck and if you find a solution let me know, I have bald patches already. hahaha

My hair also started coming out about 6 months after having my second daughter and it stopped after a few months. It is hormonal. Not to worry. It is very normal. Oh, it happened after my 1st daughter was born also.

Mine did that after each one of my children. I just started taking my prenatel (SP) vits again and a trim and that would make it a litte bit better. Then after awhile it just went away. I would pull a huge clump out of my drain every day. it would almost make me cry.

Hair loss can be a symptom of Thyroid levels being off. Other symptoms are dry skin, memory problems, fatigue etc. I am sure there are more. Consider going to the doctor and asking for a thyroid check. Good Luck.

Hi A.,

I lost A LOT of hair after I had both of my girls. It lasted for almost 9 months afterwards. Fortunatly I have thick hair so no one ever noticed but me. I think this has to do with your horomones and you should stop losing it soon.

Losing your hair after having a baby (yours is 6 mos. old) is very common. I went through the same thing after I had my son, who is now 18 mos. old. It has something to do with your hormones getting back to normal after pregnancy and childbirth. Everything I've read on this topic says not to worry about it.
