You have heard about YAZ on TV for the past couple of weeks. There is a Lawyer who is on a commercial saying if you have taken YAZ in the past Year to call a certain number. They act like it's really a big deal.
Ok, pretty sure this is a weird question. I am having some trouble with hair loss and am wondering if anyone has had this problem associated with birth control pills? I was on Yaz last year but started having breakthrough bleeding and anemia, so I was switched to Orthonovum. I started having significant hair loss after stopping Yaz but it has continued for about three months now, and I'm losing patience along with lotsa hair! Help! I know hair loss can be associated with anemia, too, and I'm no longer anemic as of last month. Anyone have similar probs or any advice?
UPDATE: Alot of you are mentioning thyroid--my doc said he tested for thyroid over the past few months and didn't find anything wrong there--are there particular tests or markers that ya'll suggest to test for thyroid? I can make sure those are on my lab work or request them. I'm going to my OBGYN this week and will discuss all of this with him. Thanks for all your input!

I have hair loss too, but I noticed mine started growing back when I went on beta blockers for high blood pressure. Odd, I know - have you had your thyroid checked?
D.,
Stressful events are another cause of hair loss. Anything unusually stressful in your life right now? An herbal stress reliever might help.
Getting checked out by a doctor is probably a good idea, but I also agree that good nutrition and vitamins would probably help. I also have thyroid "issues", but soy protein really helps me. It kind of depends on the type of soy. Non-GMO is best. I take lots of vitamins and nutrition really does help with just about everything.
My Best,

Hi D., I have a product called Nutriol that is for hair loss. My husband uses it and it has made a big difference in his hair. You can tell immediately if it works, as after you shampoo your hair, there will be a lot less hair in the sink. It's on my website. www.fogel.nsedreams.com. You can contact me through there, and I will tell you how you can purchase it at wholesale. Click on Nuskin, then shampoo and treatments. We have a money back guarantee, also. I have a salon also using the product, and getting ready to bring on another one. M.
I have had problems each time I had a baby as well as each time I went off and on birth control pills, so I assume it is hormone related. Each time it has happened - it stopped as quickly as it started. Sorry I don't have any advice, just some reassurance that it will end when your body balances out the new hormones. Good luck!
Not a crazy question.
Birth control is a horrible invention. It shuts down your body's natural process of creating progesterone after you ovulate. That progesterone affects EVERYTHING in your body from hair loss, to thyroid production, to causing cancer. I am a 9 year survivor myself! (BTW- your profile cracks me up!)
My endocrinologist just passed away or I would send you to him- he was the leader in thyroid function in the Dallas area. He used a much tighter scale for TSH. His range was in line with the european scale. US scale is .4 - 4.0. The euro scale is .2 - 2.0. Any good doctor is going to check on other associated symptoms, too. Hope that clarifies the thyroid confusion - it is very symptom specific.
The progesterone is the HUGE thing that stands out to me. My mother went to a naturopath for help with all kinds of issues. She was the textbook for early hysterectomy. Had endometriosis, horrible PMDD, migraines, blood clots from birth control, hair loss (I don't even remember her ever having hair on her arms or eyebrows - her head looked like male pattern balding, so sad) Before the doc even touched her or asked questions, he told her to get on progesterone cream. Her hair grew back, she no longer has migraines, and she hasn't had an 'episode' of IBS in over a year.
I use progesterone cream because of the protection it gives against cancer and cancer relapse. I don't know how long you have used birth control pills, but the research link to cancer is greater than the link between smoking and cancer. The relative risk scale used to give a number to the level of increased risk is only a 3.5 for smoking to cancer. The relative risk between using birth control before age 20 and cancer is an 11 - off the charts. You won't hear about it, because that goes against the women's lib movement of right to choose, etc.
research sites - www.johnleemd.com, www.mercola.com - I would check out mercola's compiled research on non-fermented soy. I'm not sure about the other lady's response about soy - check the research for yourself - we avoid soy for many reasons including thyroid function and its estrogenic properties (too much estrogen is a cancer risk, too).
I like my progesterone brand for a couple of reasons. The dosing follows the research to a T. The metered pump gives the same 1/4 tsp dose every time, which is also what the research shows as important. Also, you get a 1/2 to 1 ounce more per tube than the OTC brands for the same price. love cheaper!
Please contact me back if you need to talk - we live close!
I lost a lot of hair before having thyroid checked - also I avoid soy products and limit sugar as that messes up the thyroid - advice: go see the Dr. quickly
D.,
I can't answer your question regarding Yaz; however, for the hair loss try washing your hair in vinegar. I would first do a shampoo then 2 cycles of washing thru with vinegar. Vinegar acts as a neutralizer. You can then apply a conditioner afterwards. Once I stopped breastfeeding, my harmones went crazy and I lost an excessive amount of hair. A hairdresser told me about the vinegar, while I was out looking for hair loss shampoos. The vinegar immediately stopped the shedding. Then go on the NIOXIN website and see what distributor (ULTA 2 or Walmart salon, etc.) is close to you and purchase the cleanser and conditioner to start. You may want to try some of their other products later. Continue to use the NIOXIN for a few months. Mother of 3 breastfed babies and finally once again healthy hair. All the best to you.
Get your thyroid checked. It happened to me.
I don't know if its related to BC. However, on the thyroid part...it's TSH, and I think there are possible tests as well, t-4, t-3. One thing to look out for when non-Endocrinologists test your thyroid is that they merely make sure you are within the "range". The range (I think) is like .5 to 5.0. So, if you are 4.8....then to them you are "in range" and should be ok. However, you need to be treated on an individual basis. I felt horrible even at that level and my Endo keeps me on the low end of the range. Thyroid is treatable. Be sure to get a copy of your blood test results so you can see it yourself...don't just rely on doctors telling you the results. I would think your OB did a CBC and maybe added some other tests as well to cover everything.
Good luck - I know this must be very frustrating for you!
I am not on birth control yet but I have had gastric bypass and being anemic is something I know all to well...if I don't take my vitamins I will lose hair and if I am anemic I will lose hair I am losing hair now bc I forget to take my vits. with my newborn but I will tell you...a pill called hair, skin and nails helps out and just try to control your anemia as much as you can and try the hair, skin and nails. You can get it at any GNC or vit. store.
It can also be thyroid. Can find out with a blood test. G. W
