Hair Is Constant Rats Nest.

So frustrating, my daughters hair is super fine and stick straight. But it always seems to end up in a rats nest! No matter how much I brush it. We've tried using conditioner, not using conditioner, washing it every day, washing it every other day, I am just about ready to give up and just let her look like a wild child. :) Any ideas on how to keep this from happening? As a side note, when she was an infant she rubbed a bald spot on the back of her head. The weird thing is that EXACT location is the main source of the problem. She is three now, I wouldn't think that what happened as an infant would still be a problem?

Edit: Sorry, I should have said, she already has short hair. That's the other frustrating thing, it just won't grow! Her hair barely reaches her shoulders.

What can I do next?

Try some leave-in conditioner and a little hair spray. Her hair sounds like my nieces' hair! I finally asked my sister if she actually brushed their hair at any point because they ALWAYS look like they just got out of bed!

We played around with it and found that shampoo with leave-in works better to keep the tangles at bay. When it's dry, spray a little bit of hairspray and then brush it through. The spray gives it a little bit of "grit" so it doesn't knot so easily!

She also uses teeny tiny rubber bands and pulls their hair up as often as possible (also in FL so it's HOT). Pig tails up "high" are best because they can't pull them out as easily!

My mom used to braid my hair before bed, so it couldn't tangle as much . I also had a cheap pink satin pillowcase that helped it stay nicer- plus I loved it!

Tehehe, that's just what my mom said to me! My hair was always a 'rats nest'. Also fine, straight, thin, and white, there was nothing to be done with it. My four siblings all had lovely wavy hair that could be styled and managed. Apparently the 'Protestant Hair Genes' (as my mom called it) only effected one victim per otherwise Catholic family!

Soooo, she cut it short. And short it stayed my entire childhood. And short it is now. I STILL have awful hair! I like it short now, but when I was little, people thought I was a boy. :(

(The back of the head thing is just major bed head. Maybe a little spray leave on conditioner in that spot before bed?)

:)

My dd's hair is horrible too. She has extremely fine, thin hair, but hers is really curly too. I found the best for her was a spray detangler called "It's a ten." It's a bit expensive, around $17 for a bottle. Although I feel it is well worth the cost. You can find it at Target and Publix at least. Some salons carry it too. Good luck.

Use a satin pillowcase, this will help with bedhead and rats nest hair. Then a detangler and comb through it. Use a comb, not a brush. IF her hair is so fine its tangly, a brush will probably break it off.

Keep it in pigtails, braids, or some other updo will keep it from tangling up and looking crazy too.

J., I could have written this note! My daughter has the same issue, but she is 8 and her father insists on her hair staying long. (What is it with men and long hair?!?) Of course, he leaves me to deal with it all the time. I know you said you used conditioner, but how much? When I wash my daughter's hair, I use a handful... and I mean a handful. Actually the cheap V05 from the dollar store worked best, but I probably used 1/5 of the bottle each time. That actually worked well. I also agree with the other moms about keeping it up or braided. Good luck!

We used No More Tears hair detangler when I was young. It's now called Johnson's Buddies No More Tangles. Artificial ingredients. Hmm... A product without all those chemicals would be better. There are some good suggestions on this mothering site:

Good luck!

My daughter's hair is fine, this and curly. A nightmare. We use a leave in conditioner and then a hair serum like John Frieda. I also like Garnier's Sleek and Shine line. It has a great leave in that smells like peaches and works wonders. We actually use a wash out and then the leave in and follow up with the serum. Before we did this, my daughter looked like Shirley Temple and Don King had a baby.

I definately recommend a leave in conditioner, and then carry around a bottle of detangler and brush it out as needed.

I have same problem with my little girl. I have to put biologe leave in conditioner spray in her hair whether wet or dry and try to keep her hair in ponytails or little braids. My hair was the same when I was little and they will grow out of it by middle school ;)
