Hair Help & How to Learn How to Fix Really Long Hair, like a French Braid?

My five-year-old has long thick hair that has grown past her butt. Problem is, I'm not so creative on different hair styles. I can do the basic pony & piggy tails and different variations thereof, braids, and buns. What I REALLY want to learn how to do is french braid, like two french braids down the sides. I've always thought that was adorable on little girls. Anyway, I've scanned you-tube and found ''how-to'' videos but nothing that really helps me "get it". How did you learn how to french braid? Does it just take practice? Have any favorite websites you go to for hair ideas? Books? Or creative styles to suggest?

Thanks!

LOTS of practice!

What I sometimes do with my daughters' hair is a tiered-ponytail type thing: you gather some hair at the crown and tie it, then add another layer and tie it, including the first ponytail and keep going until you're at the nape of the neck. You can do 2 or 3 tiers, or as many as you want! I will also do a few little braids around her face so when I pull it back into a ponytail the hair looks a little more interesting. She also loves side ponytails with a headband.

I had a friend show me how to French braid. It's easier to see how it's done in 3 dimensions rather than trying to learn from a book or video.

I learned from watching a friend do it to another friend on our break at work. Many many years ago. I can do it to other people or I can do my own. I just did my 24 year old daughters the other day with 2 french braids. I wish you lived closer I would show you how to do it. It's very easy.

cutegirlshair.com has really cute styles and they are all on video. You might go to your local cosmetology school and ask for their help too.

Whatever you do practice, practice, practice. 8-)

When I was a little girl, my mom and my best friend's mom took a class at the local community college to learn how to french braid our hair. We got to go and be their practice models. Maybe you could see if something like that exists in your area, or try a local beauty school to see if they might give you a lesson. If nothing else, ask your hairdresser if she could teach you.

Another braid I always liked and thought was pretty was called a fishtail braid, I think.
