Hair Dye at Home?

L'Oreal Natural Match was PERFECT...and they took it off the market. I've been experimenting with others and even called L'Oreal to find out why it was so good and why they took it off the market. They explained it was ammonia free AND permanent, and they don't have a replacement!

Have any of you found a good at home dye that is both ammonia free and permanent? I'm in the brown tones - 5-1/2N was my perfect Natural Match!

Thanks in advance, MOMS!

I think that garnier fructise is ammonia free and permanent. I would check them out. It sucks when they take something off the market that you like.
Good luck

Herbatint is permanent and ammonia free. It also comes in fun colors as well as normal ones. I love the Plum and Violet personally. You can get it at natural food stores and Amazon used to sell it though I don't know if they still do.

Clairol Nice and Easy. I used it for 4 years to dye my hair red and just recently went back natural (blond). My color always came out nice, and my hair is still shiny and healthy. I'm planning to buy some and put in highlights here soon. For me it always lasted a couple months before I had to recolor. It's ammonia free.

I have no idea if it is ammonia free but Clairol's Perfect 10 has been exceptional. It covers well, holds it's color, doesn't look flat and I have found it to be a very true to natural hair color. I'm sure you could find a good match in brown. I have used the dark auburn and medium auburn. The dark auburn matches my natural the best and it doesn't wash me out or look brassy like some reds can. I also like that it only takes 10 minutes. It's fairly new and it's more expensive than some of the others but it's not outrageous. If you are looking for good coverage (I have been covering old highlights for about 6 months until I can grow my hair out.) and long lasting color, Perfect 10 is great.
I have been doing my own hair and others for many many years. I don't usually use box color. I went to cosmetology school back-in-the-day, and have always gone to Sally's or another beauty supply store and mixed my own color. I was in a bind and needed to cover the highlights quickly and just didn't have the time to get to Sally's and then get my hair done. (My family was doing advent service at church and my highlighted roots were getting bad.) So I grabbed the Clairol at the drug store and tried it. I can't say enough about how impressed I was. Best of luck!

check out the brands at Whole Foods Store. That is what I used before I went Au Natural. I believe they have two brands.

Another vote for Clairol Perfect 10! (Also, not sure about the ammonia.)

I use Clairol Natural Instincts Brass free. It's non-permanent (I typically have to re-color every 6-8 weeks) but it's ammonia free. I have brown hair and it always comes out looking really nice. I don't know of any other permanent and ammonia free hair colors though. good luck.
