I am going to be coloring my hair this weekend. my questions are, what is your favorite brand of home hair color?? If you have it professionally done what is the general cost? I know everywhere is different and it depends on your length. My hair is just above my shoulders in the front and really short in the back, just barely touching the nape of my neck. is it super expensive to have it professionally done? I have been coloring my hair forever and am going to get it pretty much my natural color so i can stop doing it so much. and i am way to impatient to wait until it all grows out, plus it would look horrible in the meantime...so, what is your fav brand and why and also the professional way question? TIA!!

What can I do next?

I'm a hairstylist, at home color depends on what is on your hair right now color or chemical wise, what color it is naturally and what your desired color is. So, without knowing that, I can't give good advice.

At home color can be good if you are going 1-4 shades or tones darker. if you have previous color or highlights on your hair, I recommend seeing a stylist first. Many can even help you formulate a good color to do at home.

Do a semi permanent color so you don't get the horrible growout and so you won't be stuck with a bad color. If you are trying to go lighter, I don't recommend doing this at home if it is more than one or two shades, or if your hair is very dark. I like Clariol in base clear for subtle lightening and warmth. Go to Sally's and they can help you. Feria is a decent box brand if you are going a little bit darker.

*update*

Yeah, go to a professional stylist to get it to the color you want... red is VERY hard to color over, but also hard to keep vibrant, so do it professionally. Then, you should be able to upkeep it at home once it's the color you are after :) You may be able to color over it all and at least get it more subtle looking. There are wonderful color strippers available to professionals, Sally's may have some to strip that red, then you can do a single color and have a more natural color.

I always get the same type (now). Its Loreal Feria (6.3 but you may want a different color). I think it does give "tones and highlights" so it doesn't look like just one color which is not normal anyway. I think it looks great and covers the gray completely. I love how it looks on me and I find that I can do it and I have no hair abilities at all. It is a two step process but not a big deal. It is one of the more expensive ones but ABSOLUTELY worth the money you pay. Before I had kids 9 to 10 years ago I would get my hair professionally colored and that long ago the reasonably priced guy I went to was still $60 a pop. With an ULTA or manufacturer coupon I rarely pay more than $12 for the Feria

I go to Ulta and it's typicall 45-60 depending on the length for a single color ... I like my girl she does the job when I do not want to got to Sally's and get the stuff to do it myself or if I have let it go for too long. If I do it myself I use L'oreal; not the "nice and easy" in the box kit ... I get the stuff they use in the salons; I prefer the Redkin my Ulta uses but I do not have the ability to purchase it since the only place that sells it here only sells to ppl w/ their cosmotology license.

I use L'OREAL EXPERTISE, is runs around $14.00 but you get a base color and a highlighter tried others but always come back to this one. I broke my elbow in Nov. and couldn't do it my self so had it professionally done and it cost $1 05.00!! and that wasn't even with a hair cut, strictly color. I soon figured out how to do my own again quickly.

i always use loreal preference cream - if i have a coupon and buy it when it's on sale it's about $7. In the NY area it's about $100 to have it professionally done. my hair is about the same as yours - cropped in the back and longer in the front. i don't know - I just don't have a spare $90+ around every 6 weeks - do you?

I have mine done at the salon. I have it colored, highlighted and cut/styled. She charged me about $145 the first time. I haven't been back for maintenance, but I was told it would be a bit cheaper.

HTH!

ETA: I go lighter then my natural color. My hair is just above my shoulders.

You might check out a beauty school- (Regency etal) They have students do the work but they are supervised by teachers and it's cheaper. Win win.
