Hair Dresser Dilema - What Would You Do?

I've been going to the same hair dresser for 15 years :) I love her! In the past year, she has been providing me with free hair color so I could "touch up" my roots in between going to see her. I have lots of grays plus she knows I cannot afford to go to her every 6-8 weeks. So, I normally go about once every 8-12 weeks instead. Never had any problems with her AT ALL.

So, just recently in the past 2 months she opened her own salon (YAY! I'm sooo happy for her) About 5 weeks ago I went and got my hair done at her new salon. So, now my gray roots need touching up :) I text her and asked her if I could get some more color for my roots. No response...(ok). So a couple days after that, I emailed her on facebook asking her the same thing and let her know I can pay for the hair color. Still no response. I know she is on facebook because I see her commenting on other things. So, I just let it go. I went to Target and bought some color and touched up my roots.

My question is ... Do you think she no longer wants to "help me out" like that because now she owns her own salon? I am still going to make an appt to see her in about another month to month and a half and I'm going to ask her about it when I see her in person. But, as far as the texting & emailing about hair color I just let it go.

I wanted to add - that the color she gave me colors grays SO MUCH BETTER than anything I can buy at Target :)

What can I do next?

It is possible she doesn't want to give the stuff away anymore. My (former) hairdresser/friend changed a lot after openin her own place. She used to give me deals and put me down for a less service then what she really did to make it less expensive. She would also squeeze me in without it bein a problem. We were friends and hung out on the weekends and text on a regular basis. After she opened her own place that hanged drastically. She charged for everything, was not accomidating for appointments and would have her employees call me If she needed to reschedule. It changed her a lot. She became very stressed with running the salon and now I no longer go to her. Rather one of her former employees does my hair now. Sooo not to say that your hairdresser will change so drastically but she may not be as willing to hook you up since now it will be affecting her businesses bottom line.

Yes, L., I agree with your thoughts here, that she isn't responding because she doesn't want to continue the free color. Opening a salon is very expensive. You've been so lucky so far, and it's so nice that she did it so long. But go ahead and let it go.

Perhaps you could touch up your roots with the Target color inbetween, 6-8 weeks in and then the next time go to the hairdresser. Your hair will look good most of the time that way.

Good luck!

My guess is that she's really busy with her new business and that she hasn't gotten back to you because she doesn't have a polite way of saying "no".

What she was going before (while very kind) allowed you to go longer between visits, thus taking money from her former employer. Now, that money is coming out of her budget and she may not have the cash flow just yet.

When you go in for your appointment, tell her that you understand that she really isn't in a position to give you the touch-up kit at no cost any longer. Then ask her how much you could offer her to take some of the color home. See what she says and go from there.

My husband's friend owns a salon. She does an amazing job on all of our hair and charges us nothing- literally. Granted, we've referred a ton of business to her over the years and she books at least two wedding a year from our referrals, but she doesn't make money direcly from us. So... I've learned not to get upset when she can't squeeze me in for a cut and color. I get it... 3 hours on my hair = $30 (I insist on covering the cost of the shampoo/blow dry girl)... 3 hours on a paying customer $150.

I am helping a girlfriend open up a consignment shop. It's no small feat and it takes a lot of time.

Maybe she is on facebook to RELAX not to do "work" stuff. Everyone needs "down time".

Instead of texting or sending her an e-mail, call her. If her shop isn't that far away, maybe you can drop in while you are doing your errands and see her face-to-face.

It is possible that now that she has her own shop, she can't afford to help you out. However, you did state/ask in a message "how much is the color?" For me - that is the indication that you want to pay for it. She could be overwhelmed with the new shop, I don't know. Instead of making assumptions, just talk to her face-to-face to clear up ANY issues you may have. Works better that way - you won't have a nagging question in the back of your mind and you will get it out there.

GOOD LUCK!

Maybe call her and ask her what her price is for a color retouch?

Well, probably O. of two things:

1. She read your request and forgot about it because she's busy with her new shop.
2. Now that it's costing her money (product) she's no longer interested in giving you the color for free.

But you've made it clear you don't expect it for free anymore, so I would ask again, at your next appt. and unless you can't quite get the right match, why not just keep getting it at Target?

Since she has her own business now, just go through the Salon to schedule appt. She is probobly getting texts and fb messages from a lot of people, but no time to respond to everyone.
