What if anything does your family use to keep hair out of the drain in the shower? what is it? what is it called? does it work? Every few months we have to get the drain snaked and two handfuls of hair are removed. What do others do to trap it before it goes down?
Besides a trap, you could have everyone brush their hair before they shower. The brush catches most of the loose hairs before they go down the drain.

I'd try putting an extra catch or piece of mesh over the drain itself. The absolute BEST thing for clogged pipes is Bio-Clean. It's expensive but is completely natural and will not cause any damage to your pipes. The stuff is basically alive and eats through whatever is in your drain. The down sides are it takes a while if you have a full stopped drain and it's not fantastic on hair. However, if, once your drains are unclogged, you do this every week, your drains should stay unclogged.
Brush hair with a natural bristle brush, use a hair trap and a plumber told us to pour a cup of straight bleach down the drain about once a month followed by a little hot water on the drain cover.
We use 10 minute hair removal gel from Home Depot. It works, but you need to do it a few times. Make sure to use a funnel so that it does not hit the metal around the drain since the chemicals affect the coloring. Read the instructions. (also, when I shower, since I have long hair, when I get any loose hair from my head, I drag it along the tile wall in the shower so it sticks and then when I am done I collect all the hair from there and throw it in the garbage. It must help a little)

I SWEAR by these little wire mesh drain screens. I always find them at the 99 cent store. The work like a charm, are easy to clean out and last forever!
They come in two different diameters .. one small one large. The look like a little round metal screen that someone pushed their thumb through.

Does your drain not have a hair trap built into the drain or stopper? If not look for one at a hardware store or better yet a plumping store. You can also call a plumber and ask for their advice.
You can also purchase a snake and and clean the drain yourself.
We have a white "strainer" with holes in it (plastic) made for drains that we have over ours. I only use it with my shower since I have long hair. It stops the hair, and then I clean it off after every shower. Our drain is doing much better since. I don't know what it's called, officially, but you can probably find one at home depot (or similar store) by the plugs for bathtubs.
I have long hair and shed like crazy. We use a mesh drain cover. It's like a cup that goes under the flimsy drain cover already in place (it's an old house), or you can turn it over and place it above the drain (like a dome). It's cheap and can be found at your grocery store. It's amazing how much it saves from going down the drain. We empty it often and then I give it a good cleaning when I clean the shower to extend it's life. Works great.

Like B, I brush my hair first, then as it comes out on my hands while I wash, I collect it on the wall and remove it after I'm done showering. I also have the mesh drain. Haven't had to snake a drain since I can remember and I have 4 inches below my shoulders.

It's called a hair catcher. You can find it even at Walmart, where they sell bathroom stuff. It is very cheap, just a few bucks and works just fine.
There is a kind of sieve that sits in the drain that can catch all the hair. It works wonderfully, but has to be cleaned out quite often. I don't recall what it is called, but most hardware stores carry them.
I use a hair strainer that fits over the drain in my shower. It's inexpensive and available at places like Target. After each shower you pick up the hair and throw it in the toilet. I used to have hair down to my waist so I know how easy it is to clog your drain.

$4 at Bed Bath and Beyond, but I've also seen 'em at Ralph's. You're right it's MUCH better to just catch the hair before it goes down than to deal with it after it's trapped!

there are drain covers that are like a mesh. you would probably need to clean it out after each shower but its not so bad when it is just a little mess.
You can use a piece of steel wool and attach it to the drain cover and about once a month you need to remove the cover and it will have captured the hair. It's not the most fun job, but it works!
You can get those drain covers at the hardware store. We bought a snake (cheap) at the Home Depot for small jobs like this since I don't like calling/waiting for the plumbers.
