Hair Coloring - Sunbury,OH

I have been coloring my hair for several years and over the past year I seem to have developed some type of reaction that causes small scabs on my scalp (gross I know). At first I thought it was just a nervous habit that had developed from scratching a dry scalp, but then I realized that it would escalate after coloring my hair. I have noticed that I am more sensitive to Clairol products (Perfect 10) and the Garnier seem to be a bit more gentle. I have tried medicated shampoo and they help a little but the smell is horrible. Does any one have other suggestions (not coloring is NOT an option). I have to color about every 4 weeks and have dark brunette hair. Has anyone found a great product for sensitive scalp or maybe I should seek a good dermatologist. My hairdresser is great but I can't afford to have her color my hair so often but if salon products are better I will find room in my budget. Thanks ladies .

What can I do next?

I have the same problem that you have and it appeared after years of coloring at the salon, with no change in product. The dermatologist said that it's dermatitis and gives me a topical solution to put on my scalp nightly. I love Aveda products, but they actual make my condition worse. Good luck!

There was a post not too long ago about a person who had darker hair and wanted natural opitons and there were not only product sold at whole foods/central market style places recommended, but a also henna.
I pass this on because the products were free of chemicals which could be the cause of this reaction.
If you don't have success with that, I love Aveda salons and their products for hair color.
Best of luck!

Check this website. They will deliver to your home. They make and sell 'color oops' too. But I used a product of theirs and I had issues with just not having the gloves in the sealed box. They sent me another box of color of my choice for free.

Reading all of the reviews, people say they're a lot more gentle than many others.

Also... Keep in mind that a 'direct dye' doesn't have the same chemical makeup that causes scalp dryness and other issues and that is what most salons use.

I don't use hair color, but I have a sensitive scalp. I love to use my husband's American Crew brand peppermint conditioner. The salons sell it - it's not cheap, but lately I've seen it in Wal Mart. It's called "daily conditioner." It's white and thick and clearly smells of peppermint. It nicely tingles (the mint) after you use it.

I had to switch to Aveda hair coloring because my skin is pretty sensitive to harsh chemicals. The Aveda lasts about 3 months for me and I have very dark (almost black) hair that is very fine so it is harder to find something that works. I can't use over the counter dye as it makes my skin on my scalp peel. I pay about $65 every 3 months for my roots to be done and a full haircut, hopefully you could find something similar in your area. Since I go less often than I would have to do an at home dye it works out to cost about the same. I will mention that with the Aveda hair dye it helps to use a color preserving shampoo/conditioner as it will last longer. I like the Aveda Shampoo but since it is expensive I also use store brands that are designed to prolong coloring. Good Luck to you and I hope you find the right fit for you!

I am very sensitive to the store brand colors also. I get my hair done at a salon now but you could go into a Sally's Beauty Supply store and talk to someone that works there. They would probably know of a good brand that you could buy for people with sensitive skin.

if you can get your colorist to tell you what color she usees on your hair, you should be able to get the same thing at sallys. you will be a zazed at the difference in OTC colors from preofessional colors. It won't fade, and it's a lot cheaper to do it yourself. I am in the process of becoming a cosmetologist and feel kind of bad for telling you to do it yourself, but if you can't afford to have her do it, this is the next best option. Just make sure you have someone help you so you get it all over your head and aren't splotchy. you'll need color applicators and measuring devices, all of which you can get at sallys. also the developer. it will cost you more the first time to get everything, but after the initial purchase, you should only have to buy the actual color. The developer will come in a large multi use bottle. good luck and i hope this helps.

It sounds like a bit of eczema is being irritated by the chemicals in the dye. They can be pretty harsh on your scalp and hair.
I was coloring my hair every month to hide the gray for about 6 years when I just got tired of my hair being fried all the time. The color would look pretty tired after a few weeks, my scalp was breaking out, and my hair had split ends everywhere and broke off easily. I had to deep condition all the time to keep it from feeling crunchy.
I decided to try henna a few years back and I'll never go back to a commercial dye again.
My hair is brunette with some gray in front of my ears.
Henna covers my gray and gives me a wonderful deep chestnut color with some nice coppery highlights.
My scalp doesn't break out, my hair shines and feels silky, and I've grown it to bra strap length now. I no longer have split ends.
I mix up my henna with apple cider vinegar, and I add some nutmeg and ground cloves for scent. When I'm finished I smell like a pumpkin pie for a few days and my husband loves it. Initially I get a nice red brown, but it deepens to the chestnut within a day or so.

I go to my small local hair dresser $50 for a cut and complete color and in between colors for $20 they will trim and give your color a boost :) I know most salons are very $$$ so I cherish mine. Why don't you consult your hair dresser and see what she recommends to use inbetween coloring.

If it were me, I would ask your doctor or a dermotologist.

Other thoughts, do you use a good conditioner specially formulated for colored hair with every washing?
OR
You may want to try a color that is NOT permanent, the ones that wash out in 24 washes. That'll make it longer than 4 weeks. I'm not sure of the brand, but there's a "natural instints" that may be more gentle.

see a dermatologist. you might just have psoriasis and with a little bit of medication, it will go away.

I would first consult a dermatologist to get to the root of the problem.

Secondly, when your hairdresser colors your hair, do you have the same reaction?

There is a big difference between what the higher end salons use and what is sold OTC. It might be something you need to add to your budget for your health and safety.

Best wishes.
