Had a Hearty Appetite for Solids, Now Not!

My little boy will be 7 months on Saturday. Before Friday, he was eating solids with gusto. I had just moved up to the Gerber Stage 2 foods because he would chow through the stage 1 container and want more. Well, once I did that, he has stopped any interest at all. He'll take a couple bites, and then won't open his mouth anymore. Sometimes he cries, other times he just looks around with his mouth closed tight. He's even doing this with food I thought he really liked! He nurses at 6am, 10am, 2pm and 6pm. I offer solids at 7, 11 and 5. This morning I tried to nurse then do solids right away. Nope. Any ideas about what could be going on?

What can I do next?

Hi K.~
Im glad to see you have a good routine going, but even the most predictable baby is still just a baby...lol!! He may not like the consistency of the 2nd foods yet. It's okay if he eats more than one of the 1st foods, they are mostly for getting baby used to the solids, so if he took to eating right away (like mine did), the pkg size is really no indication of how much he should/should not be eating. That said, I am a firm believer that babies need routine to help organize hunger/blood sugar patterns so I always combine liquids and solids into one feeding. I start with the bottle so I know he is getting the nutrition he needs, and then follow immediately with solids. My son usually finishes a pkg of baby food, but not always.

It also could just be coincidence that he is coming out of a growth spurt at the same time you made the change. He could just be less hungry right now. Either way, as long as he is not decreasing the time between feedings, you can rest assured that he is full. It's a good indicator w/ older babies that if they are hungry sooner, they may need a bigger feeding at mealtime. If you are concerned, you could add a liquid feeding by adjusting the others 1/2 hour or so earlier and squeezing one in in the eve.

Good luck!

I wouldn't worry about it. Nursing is much much more important than solid foods for the first year (I really hope he's nursing more often than 4x's a day too!) if he seems to want more after a Stage 1 jar put a few cheerios on his tray and let him practice self feeding. Remember Solids are not as nutritious as breastmilk so don't fret about how much he is/is not eating baby food

take a break from solid food for a couple of days or a week.. then start again. He doesnt need to eat solid food - All fo his nutrition comes from the breastmilk, the food is just practice eating until he is 1 year old.

As he gets older you will see some days kids eat, some days they dont. My daughter is 21 months.. some days you cant fill her up.. she eats and eats,,, the next day you try to feed her the same thing she loved ... and she wont touch it..

try going back to stage one's or mix them 1/2 and 1/2 until he gets used to the texture of the stage 2's
