H1N1 Experience?

Now that a number of people have had the H1N1 vaccine, I am wondering if anyone has noticed any effects from it? I have seen a few people, kids and adults alike, get sick afterwards. Sometimes the sickness is merely a common cold, but other times it was a bad flu.

I've worried about this as I've had severely bad reactions to a flu shot in the past, and this vaccine still seems pretty new and much more potent than most.

My son had the shot, and so have I with no complications. The H1N1 is not a live vaccine, so you cannot get the flu from the shot (and the risk of getting it from the mist is extremely low, although it is possible). If you have had reactions to the flu shot in the past, you might want to check with your doctor about some of the "inactive ingredients" in the shot, as that might be what you are responding to. If you have had reactions in the past, talk to your doctor, but the shot itself is the same as the seasonal flu, but with a different chemical composition.

Hi S.,
Both my boys (ages 8 and 3) have had 2 shots of the h1n1 and I got the shot also. None of us have had any side effects from it.
I had also heard of some people getting sick from it but I think that was the people that got the nasal dose. (not sure).
Good luck.

If you get the shot the first time, you should not get sick. The nasal spray should be fine for the booster, it is only the first time that you are at risk to become sick.

I got the shot for this at the end of last month and had a runny nose right after for about a week, but it was no big deal at all, just a nuisance. I actually think I had the runny nose going in for the vaccine. My girls, ages 4 and 2, got the first part of the mist last month and were totally fine, not even tired the next day. The get the second part next week. I have been told this vaccine is actually not as potent as the regular flu vaccine, actually. I think it's the "unknown" factor that gets people worried. But every kid and adult who has gotten it (who I know) is fine! Hope this helps!
