This afternoon my daughter recieved a positive result for H1N1. The Dr seemed very calm and made it sound like I should not worry, as she is healthy and this should pass a few days. But I am nervous. Has anyone had H1N1? What can I expect? (My daughter just turned 6 last week)
Thank You Everyone

Hi J.,

Not sure if this will provide any comfort but my 3 year old niece, in Dallas, Texas also got H1N1 about a week ago. It started out that one day she just wasn't feeling well and that night at dinner threw up. She was fine after that until about two days later and the cold symptoms and fever started. For a week she stayed out of daycare, where she probably picked it up from, and just rested as much as possible. My sister tried to remain calm and just made sure her fever was low or gone at all times (with Motrin). She recovered just fine and is back in school. My niece is pretty healthy and I think that is a huge plus, which you said your daugther was as well. My sister was actually more concerned for her 18 month old son. He has asthma and had RSV last year. He was considered high risk. However, he never got it and they are both fine.

The only thing I have read is to keep an eye on bluish fingers and having a hard time breathing, that is supposedly the time to take immediate action. Again, I am not expert just what I read.

Good luck! I hope my niece's story provided some comfort.

my daughter and I got it this summer before the paranoia set in. My husband and son didn't get so much as the sniffles! Daughter recovered in about 10 days..it really knocked her out, but not in a scary sense. I on the other hand developed a pneumonia complication and was hospitalized for about 4 days. DON"T be scared though because I have a chronic illness and scar tissue in my lungs so I am NOT a normal case!! I recovered fully though and don't have to panic like the rest of the population about getting it now!

Don't worry. The only things to think about are the same things you would with any illness. Shortness of breath or dehydration. Since you already KNOW that is what she has, if her symptoms get worse and you just feel in your gut that she needs medical attention, don't hesitate to take her in. BUT don't panic either. IT will be alright.

H1N1 has not mutated into anything worse than the common flu. Many virologists think that it will not either.
The only reason we have been primed to fear it so much is the media hype associated with this outbreak. The bird flu did not materialize last go around so here we are again...trying to "make" some new news. Kind of reminds me of the terrorism color chart threat level manipulation. What good did all that do?
Just enjoy knowing your daughter will have natural immunity to this particular strain now.

It's no different then any other flu. The symptoms are the same, the possible outcomes are the same. That's all you can expect truthfully. The only thing that makes it different is a fancy name and a strain that wasn't previously covered by a shot. Bolster her immune system--which is most important. Treat it as you would any other flu.

No sure this would relive you. for two my daughter who is 2 had a snotty nose. just last Friday she woke with a fever, low. After nap it hit 103. I coudlnt' get her in until Saturday morning. Waited forever in the waiting room past my time and an extra few in the exam room. Dr came in asked why we here, I said High fever I suggested ear ache, he checked all clear, checked lungs, all clear, then tested for strep. When he came back with test resulsts said neg and said she has swine flu. NO test was done for it. I ask for sure it's that? He said You can call it anything you want a viral or swine. Take her home, rest, lots of fluids. She will be fine. Took her home. fever spike right before bed at 105 and it was time for more fever meds and I watched her before I went to bed and it had dropped to 102. Woke up Sunday fever still there but very low. By Monday it was gone. Roseola set in, still dealing with that. Coughing off at on. mostly at night. She is still cranky, tired looking. I was a bir more worried yesturday after reading a news article. why are they more worried than my kids dr.. Just watch her, listen at night make sure her breathing is ok and fever goes away.

Hi J.,
All 3 of my sons have swine flu right now. My middle son was diagnosed last Wednesday and seems good today and will most likely be returning to school tomorrow. He did get dehydrated on Sunday. Even with drinking Gatorade, it still wasn't enough for him, My youngest guy has severe asthma and seems to be hit the least :) My oldest came down Friday night with symptoms, seemed better somewhat Mon and Tues and now is running a low fever again (101.5). It will run it's course through the house but everyone should be just fine. I have been worried myself and not slept much because I'm taking care of 3 sick ones but please don't read everything you find online. The media is going crazy with this flu. My prayers are with you guys :)

I've been giving my kids Vit. C, zinc, airborne and antioxidents to prevent flu stuff. Then I found out I'm pregnant which made me worry... But so far no one has gotten sick.... lots of fluids and vitamin C etc. I'm praying for you. We're getting mixed signals about this too. The media is making it out to be so bad but then when I do research they say it's no different than any other flu or virus. Just be aware if symptoms become severe. I know they say all the cases of people who die from the H1N1 but they don't name all the people who die from the flu. I hear people can die from the flu too and I'm wondering if it's the same amount of people... prayers...

Just keep her hydrated. I have heard that dehydration seems to be one of the things making the kids so sick. Good luck to you and you daughter. My prayers are with you.

H1N1 is like any other flu, so make sure she gets plenty of fluids and rest. Like with any other flu, if after 7-10 days she doesn't seem to be getting any better it's because she's got a secondary infection...go back to the doctor to to see if it's a respiratory infection or something similar.

Not from my experience w/ H1N1, but a friend of mine just had her daughter diagnosed this past week, after a couple days it had passed and she's doing much better. I have also heard that the symptoms of this flu are not much different than the regular flu. Hope she's feeeling better soon.

My 4 kids and my husband had it. It effected each of them a little differently. The younger they are the harder they were hit and the kids are stair step in age and it was amazing to see how each one was just a little sicker than their older sibling. To compare to your daughter, my 5 year old was coughing and had a little sinus stuffiness. Then he began throwing up. He threw up 3 times in one day and not again after that. Then he got diarhea for a few days. He then spent about a week on the couch because he was too tired to even play which is SO not normal for him. He slowly gained more energy but it did take a while for him to be himself again. He never really complained of anything in particular, just that he was tired. At your daughters age, I wouldn't be too worried. Just lots of cuddling and rest time. Hope she feels better soon!!
