It depends on the state. Jen and mechanicmama are right. Call the local sheriff's department or ask the guy at a gun shop or even a pawn shop. They will know.

I am buying some kind of shotgun from our friends as a Christmas present for someone... does this have to be done through any kind of gun control agency or government department? Or does the receiver of the gift take care of the licensing issues once they've received it? I'm completely in the dark about gun laws and how all that works. This is a totally legal gun, it's just a couple hundred dollars cheaper to buy used (from a friend!) than buy a brand new one! Thanks ladies :)

This is too funny to read - I think you are getting some HORRIBLE and irrelevant advice here (along with some good advice). Research your states laws. Or call a local gun shop... they will be able to tell you what needs done (even if you aren't going though them). My father is a gun dealer, and generally personal sales between two individuals do not need any paperwork done. And since it is a long gun, not a hand gun, there are far fewer rules period. You local PD will tell you exactly what you need to know and will not judge you for it! :)
PS - There are many other reasons to purchase a gun besides to use while committing a crime. Your views are your own, but Julie L. - you make yourself look ignorant.
Check into your states laws. You can even call the local PD for some answers.
i would hope you need a license BEFORE purchasing a gun, but like the others have said, i'm sure it varies by state. I don't own any guns, but my husband has a few for hunting. Asking the local police is a great idea. Once you know where you'll buy it, ask the staff there for how to go about it. Or could you just give a giftcard for the place and your friend can go through the process of buying the gun themselves?
The rules vary by state. Talk to the guy at the gun counter at a local gun shop he should be able to give some guidance. You could also contact the police to be sure you follow the letter of the law.
It'll be different per state. But for sure and at the very least, get it in writing:
Who is the seller, Who is the buyer, Date, Serial Number, Make and Model of the gun. Get a witness to sign as well.
Check the local laws regarding licensing and check out local gun stores. Since this is a gift, ask the owner of the store if they can help you with some sort of peronalized 'gift card' so the recipient can test out several shotguns to his/her liking. You can even get a Visa gift card to include with it so the recipient knows that it's a gift with his choice on the style he wants (and maybe a gun safe suggestion as well if there are kids in or around the house!
depends on your state in okla. this can be done and the gun doesn't have to be registared. in texas where I moved to the gun doesn't have to be registared either. call your local police dept and they can tellyou
I have a little different out look, the reasons I can think of that someone would want a shot gun is not pretty, How will you feel if that gun is used for i'll purposes? J.
