when you take the kiddo to the drs cause they seem sick (cough, etc) only to be told everything is fine and then less than 3 days later they are complaining about another ailment???

I took the baby on Tuesday cause she's had a yucky cough - the drs said everything sounded fine, etc - wait a couple weeks for it to clear up. Great cool whatever.

This morning at 4am she is up and crying and saying her ear hurts.

Sigh...nothing like $60 in co-pays in one week....

Anyone else HATE when this happens???/

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks - I waited 2 weeks before I took her in for the cough - she had no other symptoms (fever, runny nose, etc) so I figured I'd wait it out but after that long it started to sound juicy - and since she had pneumonia last year I didn't want to risk it. So that was Tuesday - now it's Friday and I'm calling now to schedule to see if they'll check for an ear infection. I gave her some Tylenol and after 15 minutes or so she perked up - so I'm guessing something more is going on. Just is a bummer to have to go twice in the same week - and they make you pay again at my office - gotta love the almighty dollar. :-) Thanks for listening to my vent

I do. It pisses me off so much! My little girl gets horrible croup and 6 weeks ago she woke up and was having severe difficulty breathing. I called an ambulance and by the time she saw the doctor she was fine. No coughing. Stuff like that also happened to my son. I was treated as an over reacting first time mother only to have my son be hospitalized 6 times before his first birthday and ultimately be diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder.

I know - our pediatrician once told me that the surest way to make a fever go away is to take your child to the doctor. It'll be gone by the time the nurse finds a thermometer.

But inevitably, it's wrong to not take them, either. "Well, there's no fever; I'll bet it's just her two-year molars coming in." And then her ear starts draining fluid, and I feel like the worst mommy ever. Sigh.

I'm sorry your little one is sick. Wishes for a speedy recovery.

Coughs and colds should be treated at home, no sense in going to the doc unless it expands into something else. Colds can take up to 10 days or more to run their course. Docs probably love it that mom's usually come in way too soon, and for things that really don't require a doc visit like bumps and bruises, it's their bread and butter.

it is life...no point in feeling anger :)

just this week, one of my friends complained about their $2500 ded for an emerg surgery for her husband. Before I could stop myself, I said, "I know what you mean! How about 1/4 of a million for my son's hip replacemt?". Good God, it's not a contest & I immediately slapped my hand over my mouth. Thank goodness we're old friends...& she ended up laughing hysterically & said, "leave it to you to normalize my world"!

Or how about my son's flight physical this week....totally bogus. Not covered by insurance + a trip 1 1/2 hours away (one of the minuses of living in a small town) to use a FAA-approved dr + all the dr did was a quick "look-see" & passed my son. Whoop-de-freakin'-do! :)

I think it's happening to me right now, with my 7yo daughter. Went to the doctor last week with a cough, said it was mostly post nasal drip, used OTC meds, wait it out. Had a huge problem getting medicine in her, but just went along with life. Last night had a huge complaint of her ear hurting, I'm assuming the fluids drained in there. Sigh.

I agree, although my complaint comes with myself. I hear the cough at home and then when we get to the doctor's office.....no cough whatso ever and the doctor looks at my like I am crazy! But sometimes we as mother's might jump the gun. We want them to feel better and we take them in too early in the course of the sickness and at that time, everything is fine....then they get worse. I have been told that we have to get sicker before we can get better. I hope that she gets better soon.

I'm there with you... not just for the kiddos but for me too... I went and had my eye exam done and my eyes improved by 200% in one eye, so that doctor wanted me to be tested for diabetes. Since I hadn't been to my doctor in about 3 years I asked to be tested for diabetes as well as a physical. Well they said they couldn't get me in for the physical until end of November but could get me in for the diabetes testing at the end of the week... well, test came back I didn't have diabetes but I am very anemic. I had made the appointment for the full physical after my diabetes appointment, but I couldn't be seen until December5th. Well, there was no way I was going to pay for a 3rd copay or 4th for that matter, so I told the doctor I would do the further testing for the anemia with my full physical. If I never had my eyes done I probably wouldn't have schedule any of it... LOL

The pediatrician I take my daughter to has a free nurse line, I call in any time I think I need to bring my daughter in due to sickness. Talking with the nurse she asks how long the cold/cough/whatever has been present and then either tells us to wait to see if it goes away in a day or two if not come in or if she has had the symptoms for a few days to come in. So far I have never gone in without recieving a treatment of some sort (medicine or further appiontment set up to see a specialist). To me it is my childs health I will do what needs to be done and pay for that treatment if need be... my doc office actaully does not charge if we come back within a week with the same thing that has gotten worse BUT they only do that if you are not always bring your kid in at the first sign of a cold/cough/flu (have to wait 2-3 days if getting worse or high fever, over 101, is not going away after 36 hours).

As a mom you have to do what you think is best, I tend to not take my daughter in until she has had a cough for a few days because I know the doctor will not give anything unless it has been around for a few days or sounds a certian way. If your child does have an issue of always getting something then do stand your ground, maybe find a diffrent doc that work better for you/child, and it is hard to predict how a sickness is going to go sure the docs know a lot but they do not want to medicate a child for no reason that only weakens how will the medicine will work the next time they really need it. A good doctor will not treat unless there is something to treat, a cold, cough, flu usually has to be dealt with at home, just because they get an ear infection for it does not mean if treated before means that it would have not happened.

Yes, those visits are disruptive and way too expensive for millions of us. I've had over $1400 in copays in the past three weeks. My yearly deductible is $6000. I hope I never get that sick.
