Grown-up Question: Going Potty in the Night.

UGH. I'm sorry for asking thie gross question and I promise to answer all sorts of other people's questions....

A few months back I hurt my back and then my sciatic nerve and I took way too much Advil and it caused me all these issues, including having night sweats, where you wake up drenched in water. When I woke up I'd get up, change, go potty and go back to bed. One thing led to another and while I no longer take the Advil and have been Advil free for at least a month and half now, something happened to my, a-hem pottty cycle.

I drink the normal amount of fluids in the day, coffee and water mostly, but not too much coffee, and occassionaly a pop. At dinner I drink a big cup of water for helping with digestion and then I kind of knock off the fluids around 7pm-ish and go to bed at about 10pl-ish with a drink of water here and there when I brush my teeth or maybe I crave a small glass of milk.

My body for some reason will not urinate during the day and it saves it all for night and i've been getting up 2-4 times per night to go to the potty! This is sooooo annoying, as you can imagine. and it's of course causing terrible sleep. Any suggestions? I have an appointment with my Dr for other reasons in July, which of course we all know if the earliest they can get you in in April, so I thouhgt I'd see if anyone knew of something.

Thanks!

What can I do next?

Your first sentence is kind of cute! It made me smile that you're willing to answer all sorts of questions for pentence over this one!

I gotta ask if you are under a doctor's care here. If you aren't, you need to be.

I would stop drinking coffee and soda. Coffee is a diuretic. That doesn't help you.

You should be drinking 64 ounces of water a day. Get half of it in you before noon, and the rest afterwards. It may be hard for a few days, but just try it. I'll bet it gets your bladder to work for you during the day.

Of course, it would be better if you were hearing this from your doctor... please ask the doctor!!

Good luck!

It could be habit, but it's worth seeing a doctor anyway. Frequent urination can be a sign of other things. It's one of the possible signs of diabetes, so don't be surprised if your doc wants to draw blood and test.

I've never had night sweats from Advil - only from peri-menopause or right after giving birth - it means a big fluctuation of hormones.
Night urination is called nocturia.
There can be simple reasons for it as well as some serious reasons too.
It's good you are getting it checked out.
First thing I thought of was diabetes but I'm not sure that would cause night sweats too.
Obviously it's not a prostate issue.

Yes, it takes forever to see a doctor. I am glad someone else knows that.

Look up Matt Stone, 180 degree health, Diet Recovery, Eat for Heat, Nourishing your metabolism, Go Kaleo...that all sounds like a messed up metabolism, which can also mimic symptoms of low thyroid, but peeing at night is most common. I'd be willing to put money on that being the cause. Look it up, it's very interesting.

It could be habit.... I started to go at night when I was up to nurse my son and found myself waking up needing to go even when he did not wake me. I stopped it by holding it sometimes or other times going earlier if I was up. Basically breaking up the routine.

You did not say if you were trying to go during the day, but you should try; even if you do not have the got to go feeling.

Of course you should also talk to your Dr. He / she would know or could find out if there is some other underlying issue.

Good luck - I hope it all comes out ok :)

See if you can change your appointment from a checkup about minor issues to a sooner, more urgent issue appointment. Normal appointments are scheduled out in advance, but 'sick' appointments are generally quick. Same day to less than a week.

Wow, I didn't know too much Advil would cause night sweats!

IMHO, it's a habit. Your body got into the habit of going potty during the night. That happens to me sometimes - I wake up one night and go. The next night I will wake up at that same time to go. I break the cycle by forcing myself to hold it and wait until the morning. Just one night of not getting up does it for me.

Try taking a unisom or other non-narcotic sleep aid for a night or two and see if that doesn't help you stay asleep and break that habit.
