I was wondering if anyone has used Gripe Water and does it really work? My son is just over 2 weeks old and he has so much gas!! My daughter had colic and I didn't know about gripe water when she was a baby. Any suggestions about gripe water or anything else to help a gassy baby would be appreciated! Thanks!

What can I do next?

I have never heard of Gripe water but my child had collic and as soon as I switched from tap water to the store bought distilled water, it all went away!! I was so amazed, I had evan changed her formula , like the pedi suggested and it was so expensive and it didn't work but once I changed her water it all went away. It was such a cheap fix.

I also had a gassy baby. I personally had better experience with the homeopatic colic tablets. They dissolve instantly on the tongue. The brand I used was Hyland's. You can get them at Whole food stores and sometimes Discount stores (Target). You might even try Walgreens or the like. These work great. And are easy to use.

Fist of all... congratulations on the new baby boy... my son and yours share the same birthday, only 6 years apart. My baby boy just turned 6!!!!! Anyway... for him, and his 2 1/2 year old sister, when they were gassy, I would do a 4 oz. warm water bottle, and put in a peppermint. Just a plain ole' round candy peppermint. You can buy them in big bags at Wal-Mart in the candy asile. That's what my mom did to us and all the baby cousins, and it seemed to work. I'm not sure if it's the peppermint (my mom says yes...) or just the warm water. Cause if you think about it... babies don't get any water except for what's in their formula. Sure, doctors say they don't need it, but I think it's still beneficial (sp?) that they have some every once and a while. Hope this idea works. Good luck!!!!

We used it when our baby was 3 weeks old and colicky. It seemed to help more than anything else. You can get it at Kroger, some Walmarts,Kid to Kid and herbal remedy stores. Mylicon works good too. The purpose of the Mylicon is to break down the larger gas bubbles into smaller gas bubbles so that your baby can "toot" them out easier. If he is tooting more after the drops they are working :) You can give it up to 11 x's a day, but hopefully you will not need to :)
Hope this helps, good luck!

Gripe water never worked for us but I had a freind who said it worked for their baby. we use the mylecon gas drops (but we buy the generic target brand it works just as well and costs about 7 dollars less)

also, we used it more than directed it never had any negative effect on them...

Gripe water was a God-send for us. It worked really well. One thing - the lady who first sold it to us said to be sure to always use the full dosage, even thought it may seem like a lot. She said it didn't work for her child at first because she wasn't giving the full amount, but when she finally did, it worked. We always had great results.

One other note, I think I am going to try that peppermint & warm water idea for my son now (he's 18 months) in a sippy cup - that sounds like a great idea!

Hello T.,
Congratulations on your new baby. There are lots of good responses here. if you're breastfeeding... I just wanted to ask you if have you taken a look at what you're eating? skip dairy and carbonated drinks for a few days. and any food that gives you gas. that's will probably help. do you take probiotics? that could help too. do try other formulas but also check your diet. good luck! and mylacon works great too. ~C.~

I was too scared to try gripe water. I have heard of it. My 5 month old daughter has been gassy since about two weeks. I tried Mylicon drops, but they seemed to make her worse. We switched her formula around and found one that helped. It's Enfamil Nutramigen. It is $$$ but it helps. Also, I asked my DR for Hycosamine drops. They are better than anything over the counter. I was using them once a day for a while, you can give them every 4-6 hours. But I am happy to say that she hasn't had the drops in at least a month or more! I hope you find the solution for your baby!!!

I used the gripe water and maybe I wasnt doing it right, but to me it didnt seem to help. I then used the gas drops like mylecon or the store brand and they worked wonders. I have also used the colic tablets and they also worked wonders. The tablets re all natural so it wont harm young babies. It dissolves in their mouth within seconds so they dont choke on it. Good Luck! I hope I helped ya out.

My son was very fussy for the first few months of his life. I couldn't breast feed (he was premature) and after I stopped pumping and had to increase his formula, he got worse. So, we adjusted his formula type several times and finally found that a combination of Gentle-Ease and a soy-based formula did the trick. We couldn't just use one or the other, we had to combine them! They're both made by Enfamil.
Grip water or gas drops never really seemed to make a big difference, but I would try them if you're breast feeding.
Good luck to you - I know what you're dealing with is difficult.

Never heard of gripe water. So many new things come out after your kids grow up. However mine used to have a problem with gas. I switched her formula to soy milk. It was my best choice! Cause when they also get sick or run fever they can have their formula. Also i did not use the powder, i used the ready to feed. Mine also was drinking pedialite. Hope this helps. My daughter was also 2 weeks old when I switched her formula.

Hi T.,
Gripe Water definitely worked for our two youngest daughters when they were about this age and had colic. Mylicon worked great as well. We switched back and forth between the two and it seemed to work like a charm.

Good luck and hang in there!

I didn't read all the responses but I had/have a very gassy 4 month old who has been gassy since birth. Mylicon did not do much for her and I wish I had remembered to use the Gripe water. I heard good things about it. A couple of things I did do...burp him about every ounce or two if you are bottle feeding or every few minutes or so if breast feeding. My pedi recommended this. I am not sure the exact ratio but more than you would a non gassy child. Keep them upright for 20-30 minutes after you feed her to help decrease reflux. My child burped better when I placed her in a seated position on my lap supporting her head and burping her in this position. I think it was because there was increased pressure in her abdominal area which helped to force out the air. Make sure she has a good seal on the bottle or nipple. If you see air bubbles in the bottle and/or milk coming out around her mouth, the seal is not adequate. You may want to try different nipples if bottlefeeding to see which is a best fit. This brings me to my next point, I tried 3-4 different types of bottles and the ONLY one that helped to eliminate the gas was Dr Browns Pedi recommended bottles. Such a difference! There are extra little parts to wash but worth it for me! My daughter was able to have a good fit on the nipples. Avent and Nuks were wider and more difficult for my daughter to fit her mouth around. As you can see I tried many different things to decrease the gas and discomfort for my child! Good luck!

I LOVED Gripe water with my second for gas. Wish too that i Had known about it for my first who was very colicy!

I did research on it here and other places before I bought it for my second child and let me tell you that they are NOT ALL THE SAME! Some have un-natural ingredients in them and taste aweful (yes, I tried them) and some turned my son's stool black. I, after much research and a few test-tries, bought Colic Ease. Look them up on line. Their web page is VERY informative at why some of the other colic meds are BAD! And it smells kind of wierd but tastes natural, semi-sweet, and good like cinnamin (sp)!

Good Luck!

I haven't ever used Gripe water but have used the Mylcon drops, which worked some of the time. Not sure if you're breastfeeding or not, but if so, what you're eating could be affecting his tummy. After several weeks/months of gassiness and fussiness, we found out my daughter had a milk/soy intolerance. So I had to eliminate all food made with milk or soy. It made a huge difference in her! Massaging the tummy in a counterclockwise motion helped as well....and of course, pushing the legs/knees towards his chest can help let out some of the gas pressure as well.

Enjoy your new bundle of joy!!!

I never used it on my own 4 children (now 11-18 years old) but did use it with a baby that I worked for as a "newborn night nanny". It was amazing! Her parents also used Mylicon but the gripe water seemed to work better for her. She finally had stopped needing it by the time I stopped watching her at around 15-16 weeks of age. Good luck. Oh, if you know of any families that need a "newborn night nanny", let me know. I am a RN and have 14+ yrs newborn nursery experience. It is usually a short term thing and usually from 10p-6a. I've never heard of Gripe water, I will say this Mylicon only works if you give it at the time you feed them. Also I had one who was colicy & reflux issues I carried him around on my arm on his stomach and it helped relieve the pressure.

It is most likely going to be lactose intolerance with a new born. My 2 kids are now vegan because they were having several problems with milk right from the beggining of their little lives!!
You might want to try a new formula?? There are lots out there for lactose intolerance.
Maybe look at the link below... or similar products to this on the market.
http://www.enfamil.com/Gentleasesample/

You can even get free samples which is great!! I love bargains!!!! You can even sign up and get really good coupons.I got one,for up to $10 off, before from Enfamil.I hope you find something soon that will help your baby.
Best of luck to you!!

--M. (____@____.com)
p.s --You might first want to find a cause of the gas and not just treat the gas as a symptom but get to the cause of it and then help the baby correct it.Make sense?? I mean getting rid of gas is great if that helps the baby but you may want to find out what is creating the babies gas in the first place.
