Hi Mama's. My almost 2 1/2 year old has started grinding his teeth. I'm getting ready to schedule his first and routine dental appointment, but in the meantime... am wondering if any of you have had kiddos that do this. Isn't it bad for their teeth? He doesn't do it while sleeping, but when he's awake. I told him that it was bad for his teeth and not to do it- and of course he loves to do it now that I've called attention to it. It's like dragging your fingernails on the chalkboard!!

What can I do next?

I am a dentist and am asked about this quite a bit. It is perfectly normal, though very annoying to the parents when a child grinds his teeth. There is no reason to do anything unless it becomes a problem like one of the other respondents posted. A tooth that is ground is no more likely to get decay than a tooth that is not ground. A child does not get a cavity by grinding; however, the grinding could wear the tooth down to the nerve and a pulpotomy (a simple procedure that removes the nerve and thus any pain) may be necesary with placement of a stainless steel crown. This is VERY rarely necessary. Most kids will lose their teeth before it gets to that point. As an adult you can wear an appliance to prevent grinding but children would not tolerate or benefit from such an appliance. Most children outgrow this habit as their adult teeth come in fully, but not all of them. If the grinding continues into the teen years, an appliance would be beneficial. Hopefully, your child will outgrow this, or you can always buy earlplugs. :)

My son (4) has done this for a couple of years now. Our dentist said that most kids do it because of the pressure of the premanent teeth moving around and it feels good (thing of a baby chewing on things when they teethe). Since they are just baby teeth it won't cause any problems (or shouldn't).

I understand about the nails on a chalk board feeling. My son is sleeps in my bed a lot as my hubby works out of town M-F and if it gets too bad I rub a tiny bit of baby Orajel (sp?) in his mouth.
