Grinding Teeth

What can you do to protect your childs teeth when they grind them? He will grind them quite often throughout the night and it drives me nuts because I'm just worried about the damage he is doing to his teeth. Does anyone else have children who grind their teeth? What did you do to help them? I'd appreciate any advice.

What can I do next?

FYI grinding teeth is a sign of stress even in kids, but also the obvious teeth coming in.
school, home, someone he might not like at school
the smallest thing can upset a child so try to pin point the problem. try spending more time with him before bed and making him relax

I have a 3 year old daughter that does the same thing, and I've asked her dentist about it. He told me not to worry about it right now, that she should outgrow it. He also said that if she didn't outgrow it, then they could fit her for a guard that she would wear at night, but that it wouldn't be beneficial to do it right now at her young age. Hope this helps!

I'd first take your son to the dentist. They can fit a mouth guard to protect his teeth. Sometimes teeth grinding is an early warning for a medical issue, sometimes its just teeth grinding... either way, I'd at the very least let your family doctor know about it so that if it doesn't improve or go away, they'll know how long its been going on. A friend of mine has been a teeth grinder for as long as she can remember and her teeth have been ground down over the past 40+ years. She had/has no other symptoms of anything except this grinding when she sleeps. She's only worn the guard the last 15 years, but she said it not only kept her teeth from being ground down more, but it helps her with the jaw pain that is associated with the grinding. Hope this helps.

I have a 6yr old who grinded her teeth for years. I too grew tired and annoyed with it. I asked her dentist about the damage it could cause to her teeth and he said that most kids just grow out of it. I took it upon myself to go to Walmart and buy one of the mouth pieces in the sports section. I followed the directions on fitting it to her mouth and it did wonders. She now doesn't do it that often and is almost out of that stage all together. I hope this helps!

You can go to Wal Mart to the sports area & buy a mouth guard. Follow the instructions on making it fit to your son's mouth. This is cheaper than buying one from the dentist.

Good Luck!

I ran this one by my husband (he is a dentist). He says it is perfectly normal and not to worry. Your son should stop when his adult teeth come in.

My son does this too. My MIL said that my husband did it as a child also, but he doesn't do it now. I'm not worrying about it until his permanent teeth come it. If he still does it then, we'll talk to his dentist.

My daughter grinds her teeth and it frustrates me too,but I haven't done anything about it yet.I forget when I take her to the Doctor's Office to ask why she does that.I really need to know what to do about it.I hope that the problem is nothing serious, but if you find out anything let me know and if I find out any information I'll let you know.My daughter is 5 years old too and I hope we find something out soon.

Try getting a night guard from your dentist, or his bite might need adjusting by a dentist. My kids were fine after my dentist worked on the way the teeth fit together in the bite I have five kids all young adults now and now all but one do not grind their teeth she still uses a mouth guard.
