Hi All;
I want to know if anyone has ever experienced green stool with their newborn baby. My daughter is six weeks old and she is on formula. In the beginning her stool was a yellowish/mustard color and sort of curd consistency, now it is very mushy and a dark green color. i have two other girls and did not experience this with them. Is this normal? Any suggestions.

What can I do next?

My peditrican told me to get the book Baby 411. It says that a newborn who is strictly formula fed will have poop that is like strained peas and formula poop tends to be green. Any shade of yellow, green, or brown is okay. My son is both breastfed and formula fed, and when his changed I freaked a bit. But once I looked in the book, they said it is normal. My son is going on eight weeks and I believe about two weeks ago is when I noticed the change.

Yup, my daughter's was green too. I joked that I was going to submit the color to Sherwin Williams. It was like a forest or hunter green. She's a formula baby, too.

good question. i dont think its not normal. my seven week old daughter is also on formula and sometimes her stool comes out that yellow color and at times it comes out dark green. i asked my doctor about that and he said not to worry. From what I have noticed, and I could be wrong, but when she doesn't have any bowel movements in a day, the next day it comes out dark green, and the next stool usually comes out yellow. Hope that eases your worries a little.

Is this an all the time thing or something that just happened once or twice? It is normal for stool to change a little bit if you have recently made any changes in her diet (i.e. changing from breast feeding to formula). It may just be the formula that she is on. I think I remember experiencing this once or twice with my daughter but it didn't last so I didn't panic.

Your daughter is still getting used to her new diet since she is only 6 weeks. I wouldn't panic just yet, but if it continues for more than a week or if you see any other symptoms that concerns you I would talk to the doctor. She may need to be put on a different formula or something.

I see that other moms have posted that the color is normal, I agree. But I went through a phase of having my daughter on an Alsoy formula because the enfamil irritated her stomach. I thought she was lactose intolerant, also but it turned out to be something she grew out of.

Not at all that uncommon. Type in green stool on the google search engine-- in newborns--- the idea of an infection is possible if you have noticed any other symptons-- you didn't mention that-- so based on the fact she is taking formula and it probably has iron that may be it-- sometimes the iron isn't absorbed-- watch the next few diaper changes it should just pass--

Both my sons had green stool at times when they were infants. They were both formula feed. (enfamil lipil.) not sure what your daughter is on. It totally normal.
