I have some of those cute Crane filterless humidifiers. In the packaging, it say to only use water and not add any chemicals. How can I keep the water from getting slimy? I've heard that you can use GSE or tea tree oil. Anyone do this? How much do you use? Does it prevent slimy water?

What can I do next?

I have a Crane Penguin humidifier, and I use a Protec Cleaning cartridge. I get them at Wal-Mart and they last about 3 weeks each. They are about 3 dollars each. It is a little ball that you drop in that has beads. It keeps the water from getting slimy by inhibiting the bacteria and mold growth. They are located on the top shelf near the pharmacy, near the humidifiers I think. Hope that helps!

I am not sure what kind of humidifier this is but I would think regular use would prevent any slimy water. If you mean for the mineral deposits you end up with, you can use distilled water-or half distilled and half regular tap water. I use this combo in our home humidifier when we use it and in my iron so I don;t get white stuff on the clothes.

most humidifiers now have filters, I have NEVER had a slimy water issue and I just use plain ole tap water. If you use distilled water you won't even have mineral build up on the filters, but that would be like $2 a day to run and I'm too cheap for that.

We have always used tea tree oil in ours and it works fine. It also kills any mold.
