Green Bags

I got some D.M. Green Bags a week ago after reading here that they were a good investment. Sunday, I bought some produce and used them. I took a banana out yesterday morning and it was lovely. But this am, the freckles had started. I'm wondering if these only work if you don't open the bag? I did a Google and the reviews are so polar. Either they're amazing or a waste of money. Wondering if anyone else has noticed if they work better if you don't touch them? I'm going to watch the lettuce since I opened it this am, too. It certainly was as nice as it was Sunday, and much better than the head I'd washed and wrapped in a towel (a trick I have had good results with)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the input re: the veggie storage. I think I have several different needs with produce storage and these bags work very well for delayed use. No question my bananas reacted to opening the bag, because when I skip several days, they stay the same as they looked the day after I opened it. I'm going to see about tupperware for cut produce, which the bags don't help with since they are then wet. Washed lettuce stores well in a damp towel but dry holds in the bags very well. Thanks again and bon appetit!

I haven't tried them with bananas but they are wonderful with fresh broccoli :) I use a lettuce keeper plastic container for my lettuce and it is WONDERFUL! I am going to look into the tupperware containers for other things.

We have been using the green bags for about 6 months now & swear by them. If there is excessive moisture on your fruits or veggies - they don't last as long, so if you wash before bagging, make sure you dry as much as possible. What we do with our bananas is use banana tree to hang them, then pull the bag down over everything, tucking the opening of the bag under the "tree". This works great. You can also buy "green bags" for lunchmeat & cheese from one of the shopping channels (not sure which one, my Mom bought them for me). We didn't have as much luck with these and have stopped using them. One thing to keep in mind - they say that you can use these bags 10 times each - as you use them the color fades until you have an almos clear bag. We use them until they are almost clear and then throw them away. I hope this info was helpful.

Hi S.,
My mother gave me some DM Green Bags to try. My bananas went bad pretty quickly. I didn't close the bag, though. My mom said I didn't have to. Maybe I should have... I'm not convinced that they are as great as she says. Maybe we should try closing them! : )

S.,
Bananas brown if they are refrigerated, so if you put them in the green bags and then refridgerated them, that is the reason for the brown spots not decay. Banana skins brown when chilled.

I was going to try the green bags, but thought they were a little to expensive. I bought the Rubbermaid produce saver containers, got various sizes, and let me tell you they are super, and they can be used for ever. I have put grapes in and in a week and a half they were as fresh as they were when I put them in. had great results with them.

I never did try the bags, sounded good but decided to pay the money for the produce safers instead, used with fresh tomatoes, and other fruits blue berries etc. Banannas did not try. If you try let me know what you think.

I bought green bags because my son eats a banana every morning, and I have one in my breakfast smoothie... By the time 10 banana's are at least 5-6 days old.. YUCK!

They work GREAT!

My house is warm and the banana's don't last long at all... But with the green bags I can buy some slightly green nana's and be golden yellow and yummy about 5 days later. I love them!!!

i have never tried the green bags, but i use the tupperware produce containers in the fridge and they are AWESOME! Lettuce will stay for weeks or longer. Its great with fruit and other veggies as well. probably not bananas, but i keep those on a hook and eat them so quickly i have not had a problem. I have definitely gotten a return on my investment with tupperware.

I've had great success sometimes, and no success at other times. I wonder if it has to do with the age of the fruit when you first put it in the bag. I've had plums and strawberries last weeks. Lettuce doesn't do so well for me. I know there shouldn't be any moisture in the bag, which is pretty hard b/c some fruits seem to produce it when left in the bags for a few days. I'd be interested to read your responses. Great question !

Hi S.,

Although I haven't tried them myself (but really want to), my mother-in-law absolutely loves them! She said they give her much more time to eat the food before it goes bad.

Don't judge the banans by the skin, see if they're still nice when you open the banana itself. Sometimes the skins brown/spot while the fruit is still yummy! Hope the bags work well for you.

I go really green as I wash all fruits and vegetables with a natural cleaner made from yucca, aloe, agave & coconut extracts. This not only removes all pesticides on the surface but since it makes water wetter, everything is magically crisped up. Have been doing this for 28 years as I am very concerned about ingesting chemicals for me and my family.

My son who was a chef said to wrap lettuce, parsley, etc in damp paper towels or cut up and put in bowl with damp paper towel on top. Dampen each day and replace and the salad stays remarkably fresh for 3 to 4 days without turning brown.

God Bless, Gladys

I love the green bags! The only thing is that no matter what, fruits and veggies are going to go bad. The green bag just slows this process down. If you really think about it, since Sunday, those bananas would have browned long ago. Opening the bag does unfortunately expedite the process but you can't keep the bag closed forever! I tested bananas by putting some in green bags and putting some just on the counter as I normally do, the ones on the counter browned within 3 days while the green bag ones started freckling in about 7 days!
