Greek Yogurt? - Jefferson City,MO

Does anyone actually eat this stuff?

I picked up some Chobani Greek Yogurt at the grocery yesterday. I've seen it everywhere and was curious as to what the hype was. I got the honey type and the lemon type.

It's so bitter! I had to add some stevia to make it taste good enough to choke down! And I still have 3 more tubs of this stuff! Argh! What do I do with it?! I figured that the honey would be at least a LITTLE sweet....NOPE!

Suggestions?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I was just wondering if you usually add something to it to make it taste better. The stevia really did help cut the bitterness. Yes, I suppose I am used to regular yogurt.

I do like that it's nice and thick, but still fat-free. I'll take your advice and go for the fruit flavors next time.

Thank you, Jessica...I'll stick it out through the rest of the tubs I bought and see if I don't acquire a taste for it. :-) Perhaps it has to do with the fact that I've never had anything quite like it. The only Greek yogurt I've had was in Tzaziki!

I love it. I think for some people you have to try it many times to get used to it. My mom hated it at first. Maybe everyone's taste buds are different.

Wow. I opened this expecting you would ask for brand suggestions and I would have replied Chobani. Goes to show everyone has different tastes, it is my favorite brand. I never ate the honey. Now, I buy plain and blend in fruit myself. However, before I cut down on sugar/processed foods my two favorites were Chobani pineapple and blueberry. So creamy and rich. I thought those flavors were sweet enough.

I love Greek yogurt. The Chobani cups are yummy, especially thr pineapple and the mango, but you can use plain in place of sour cream or in place of some of the oil in baked goods. My boys love smoothies made with fresh or frozen fruit, Greek yogurt and milk, you could make smoothies with the yogurt you have left.

Chobani Greek Yogurt is delicious! I have never had the honey (why didn't you just add more honey?) but the lemon is good. Not bitter. My favorite flavor is the pineapple. You are probably used to eating regular yogurt which is loaded with sugar and very fattening. You can return them but I am really surprised by your dramatic experience.

I love plain Greek yogurt on my cereal instead of milk. But then again, I've always found what most people here consider yogurt (Dannon, Yoplait, etc) to be far too sweet. I usually buy 10% fat Cabot brand. Yes, I like butterfat - I drink whole milk and eat real butter - I eat Greek yogurt for the taste not for something lo-cal.

Another reason to stick to real Greek -- the regular yogurts often are loaded with artificial colors that nobody needs (and some people, especially kids, can have bad reactions to artificial coloring).

And I LOVE the fact that Greek yogurt has twice, often more than twice, the protein of other yogurt.

Do try the fruit flavors. And give the sour taste -- it's really more sour than "bitter" -- a chance. Europeans think our yogurt is runny, thin and disgustingly sugary and I understand why. They are used to much lighter flavors so a honey-flavored yogurt would have just a hint of honey rather than being strongly flavored. I hope Chobani and the others don't go too far making Greek yogurts taste "American" by over-sweetening them eventually.

If you can get your kids to like Greek yogurt you're reducing their sweet tooths and getting them a ton more protein at the same time.

Oh my gosh, I love it. I love that it's a bit sour and bitter and not sweet. It took me all of one small container to get used to it. I can't eat it plain, but will eat the one with honey. I also enjoy cherry, pineapple, apple cinnamon, mango, lemon, and vanilla with chocolate chunks. I've bought plain and added my own fresh fruit because I can't eat the pomegranate or the other types that have seeds (even though they're delicious too).

They have a higher calcium content and protein content because they're not filtered out... they're not "yogurt like" products but ACTUAL yogurt. They're thicker and creamier because they've been strained to remove excess liquid three times. They don't have gelatin in them, and no cornstarch (both thickeners) or any other food thickeners. If a yogurt has a thickener in it, generally speaking, then it's not a true yogurt and will have little benefit for your body.

They don't have refined sugar or high fructose corn syrup and no artificial food dyes. They might not come in "low fat" or "no fat" but they actually contain the right type of fat that you need. They also have three different types of live, active cultures in them which makes them perfect for helping keep a healthy gut balance and vaginal flora.

I compare the Chobani with every other big name brand that comes out with their own Greek style, and really that's all they are... Greek "style." I've gotten one of my girls to tolerate a couple of the Chobani flavors, and one of my girls loves them all. My other daughter has sworn off yogurt right now claiming "it's all too sweet!"

Love it. I buy the plain since the fruit flavored stuff is way way way too sweet (sorry). I like the Chiobani best, then the Fage. The Costco greek yogurt is very good as well. Add fresh chopped fruit. Or - serve with apple slices, honey and chopped walnuts. Yum.

Regular yogurt is only sweet when you buy the flavored stuff (including vanilla). It is sweet because it is LOADED with sugar.

Greek yogurt is higher in protein than regular but LOWER in calcium. One serving of regular yogurt provides 50% of an adult's Ca requirement. One serving of Greek is only 20%.

I think Greek yogurt is delicious and it's much healthier than the American version of yogurt. If you enjoy breakfast shakes, you could use it for that.

Did you get the Chobani with the fruit in it?? That is better than the plain. I'm Greek and I've been eating this stuff for decades, but it is an acquired taste! ;) Honey does help but always go with the fruit flavors, they do have more sugar but it's worth it!

AE makes a super delicious Greek yogurt that really isn't Greek yogurt. They basically add protein powder which adds protein (obviously) and thickens it. It is very tasty, my kids eat it like crazy!

You can add it it things that you would normally add mayo or sour cream and it's a little healthier. Hopefully you'll find something to do with it! :)

lol! I did the same thing too because everyone and their mama was picking up the stuff. I noticed it's not sweet like regular yogurt more creamy and richer though. I bought granola from the health food store and added it in doesn't make it more sweet, but it's actually pretty tasty. You can add it to cake mix, makes it dense like pound cake. You can eat it with strawberries as a dip. There is alot to do with it I haven't though. But there is hope to liking it lol.

We love greek yogurt, but my husband LOVES that Chobani stuff, me not so much. I do agree with you that it has a little bite to it, but we add fruit and nuts to it too sometimes. Try a different brand because it really is good if you find a flavor you truly like.

Yuck! I agree!

I had heard so many good things about it I bought some and my reaction is the same as yours. I got pomegranate and a couple other flavors. Honey and I can't remember the other one. They all tasted bitter/sour. My suggestion would be to find somebody who likes the stuff and give it to them.

I'm not a huge fan of Chobani. In fact, out of all the Greek yogurts out there, the only one I like is Fage (but not the fat-free, NEVER the fat free, the 2% is perfect). It's the only yogurt I CAN eat plain. Rich and creamy and not nearly as sour as regular plain yogurt. Chobani? Not impressed at all.

I eat it with mixed berries and one tablespoon of Chia seeds mixed in. Delicious...and filling!

Greek yogurt does take time to get used to. I do NOT like lemon in anything-not even tea-and do not really care for any honey yogurt so can't help you there. But I love the mango and the strawberry. My husband did not like the yogurt at first but he steals mine now. My 1 yr old loves it. You could use it in jello if you really do not want to eat it. Use it in place of the cold water.

It might be the brand you got. It does have a different texture I know for sure. But as for the taste I like it so much better than regular yogurt. And my boys can eat it where they can not eat regular yogurt.

Blech. I hate the stuff too. It was AWFUL! I don't understand the people that say it tastes great. There are plenty of other things I can eat that don't taste half as bad.
My suggestion...throw it out. Lesson learned!

My husband LOVES greek yogurt. And he loves honey. But he will not eat the honey greek yogurt.
He prefers a few of the flavors: blueberry, strawberry/banana, pineapple, blood orange, and the apple one. He doesn't like regular yogurt anymore because it is too sweet.

He uses the plain to make protein smoothies.

I think when I first tried it, I noticed that it wasn't as sweet as say Stonyfield and didn't like it that much. Now, I love it and my kids are eating it too! It just takes a little time. I think the Chobani brand is the best, I love the blueberry and black cherry flavors. My kids like the Chobani kids honeynana flavor the best, berry berry too.

Once I accidentally bought a 16 oz. carton of plain greek yogurt, thought I was buying vanilla. It was awful, but I ended up using it as sour cream and it was great, it had a bit of a tang to it. I used it on tacos, chili, even made a dip with it.

greek yogurt can be a little too barn yard for me to eat sweat, I eat is savory, and use it in place of sour cream. I also have put it in fruit shakes. But I really don't like the store sweetened greek yogurt. If i"m going to eat is sweat, I use my own honey, or preserves.
